Harrop: Looking Back, I Should Never Have Joined Ipswich 20th May 2025 16:25
Former Blues loanee Josh Harrop has admitted he should never have joined Town for his spell in the second half of 2020/21 having failed a medical due to an ongoing injury from which his career never recovered. 16

“I think I signed a new deal, three years, then got this injury which was so strange - a tendon injury behind my knee, where your hamstring attaches,” he said.

“I just remember feeling it one day and played on it for a couple of months, but it was sore. It was just never going away. The physios were telling me it was just fluid behind my knee - they couldn’t really work out what it was.

“That is when I went on loan to Ipswich and they knew about the issue. They scanned me and I failed a medical at Ipswich for this issue.

“They wanted to sign me anyway. Looking back, I should never have gone. I should’ve recovered the issue. I knew I wasn’t right, I knew I wasn’t properly fit. I went there for six months. It was a bit of a mess”

Feel a bit sorry for him, and all the stick he got, after reading that.

Shambles.

For some reason I always remember listening to his first interview on BBC Suffolk while driving home from work and thinking that I had never heard a player sound so devastated to be joining us. It has a whole new context now. Poor lad.

Feel sorry for him. Career ruined by injuries and what sounds lack a complete lack of physical and mental care from clubs. And now in the Baller League.

A good story to show young players and how they should make the most of any opportunities they get. Never know when it will all come crashing down.

My initial thought seeing the headline was that's a bit harsh on Town but it was a mess. Then seeing the detail you just think you have to feel sorry for him.

Isn't that a big difference between then and now? "I failed a medical at Ipswich for this issue. They wanted to sign me anyway. Looking back, I should never have gone. I should’ve recovered the issue. I knew I wasn’t right, I knew I wasn’t properly fit." Compared with desperate to sign a striker on deadline day and Broja fails his medical.

Yes same, I think Phil has done him a bit dirty haha. Waiting for the comments on the socials from those that don’t bother to read it!

Genuinely wasn't the intention. I thought it would be good for him for people to read the background to his situation here and afterwards. Preston come out with very little credit, appalling way to treat a player.

Not unusual for players to sign after failing medicals, Jens failed a Brentford medical before signing here, of course, and Alan Lee failed his medical when he signed and wasn't insured as a result. It's all about risk and with a loan player there's obviously not the same level of risk as you're not paying a fee, not at that level anyway.
