No Smoking Ban 29th May 2001 14:18
The ban on smoking in the upper tier of the South Stand is to be lifted. Up to now smoking has not been allowed in the new tier, but the club is allowing smokers the chance to puff away to their hearts' content during the new season. 1

The pre-smoking ban world seems a long way away.

Obviously today, there's just an inordinate number of people who need a sh1t at half-time.....

Also of note: Phil’s upbeat carefree tone. “Puff away to their heart’s content.”

It seems almost unthinkable now that smoking at footy or indeed the pub was acceptable and considered normal. Go home after a night out stinking of smoke because that’s just the way it was.

The first few months after the smoking ban, every pub smelt like vomit/ parmesan - remember thinking about how grim it was.

Smoking is pure grot - I used to get through 20 a day in my teens, mucky old habit.

Helpful cover when you got a bo11ocking of the old dear for stinking of fags when you got in to be able to blame the pub in general though.

The idea you could ever smoke on aeroplanes is absolutely mental.

Trailing vapour since 1999.

I'm quite amused by much younger me's irony.

Years ago i left my Wrangler cord jacket in the Macebearer pub in Bury after a Town night game. Didn't realise for nearly a week so went to retrieve it. It absolutely stunk of fags, so bad in fact i had to bin it. Shame, i liked that jacket.

I honestly used to think that a couple pieces Wrigley's Spearmint would cure all - mother, sadly, saw through my disguise.

Used to sit on the smoking carriage on the train coming back from Uni up north - honestly, more passive smoking in an hour's travel from Donny to Peterborough than in perhaps any pub in the whole of England. The tables were stained amber-yellow, Vappers - pure ming!

Those carriages *absolutely* hummed.

It was disgusting wasn’t it. All your clothes from the night before would be stinking and have to go straight in the wash.

How could the ban on smoking in the new upper tier of the South Stand have been lifted by May 29 2001?

What was the first date that the South Stand was open and used? I thought it was later than this.

The earliest story on fans using the upper tier I can find is this:

New Tier Seating 23rd Mar 2001 18:49
Town have announced that the extra 2,000 tickets, planned to be available on the top tier of the South Stand from the Newcastle game, will go into the existing ballot. 0

Might be wrong, but thought it was opened for the Liverpool midweek game l, a few days before Newcastle.

I raise you the cellar bar in the Albion Mills, eye-bleedingly smoky. Ironically, eventually you had to go out to smoke as there was so much smoke in there matches wouldn't light.

You are correct:

More Ballot Tickets for Liverpool 4th Apr 2001 18:26
Town have confirmed that they will have extra seats available in the South Stand for this season's remaining games. Yesterday the stand was seen by safety inspectors and the club have now been given permission to seat fans in the new tier. 0

I sat down on the smoking carriage once when I was commuting. Took me about five seconds to realise it was a mistake. Think that was actually grimmer than a rail replacement bus via Newbury park.

I think I could accept that a big night out meant being covered in smoke but I absolutely detested the same thing when going for a beer or two after work.

I remember having a ciggy in the Cobbold back in the day. Seems weird now. I dont even smoke anymore anyway.
