After he'd turned down a move to West Ham for £3m wasn't it?

I remember being pleased that he and Hermann turned down moves and then hearing Sheepshanks say he was pleased they wanted to stay but it wasn't good for the club they had turned the deals down. We got Holland on the cheap because Bournemouth had gone into administration so that one went full circle.

I think it was more to do with the length of the contract. He wanted the extra year and Villa wouldn’t offer it.

Remember when we sold Ambrose to Newcastle for even less. Was it 100k? We were in admin then and completely skint and that money would have covered the wages that month and kept us out of insolvency. Absolutely sucked at the time. He was a stunningly good young player.

Thought it was £1M, which was still cheap at the time but we desperately needed the money.

I remember when we signed a player named, Simon Milton. What a quality signing that was! 😁

It was £1m
But what made that worse was Sheepshagger had come out a few days earlier and spoke a load of cr&p about not going into some sort of full administration because that would result in a fire sale of players on the cheap. But then immediately sold Ambrose on the cheap.

The Holland deal was annoying as Holland spoke a load of cr&p about staying to fight the cause when he turned down the £3m move to Villa and then jumped for £800k to Charlton.

Although the Darren Bent move is just as annoying. Curbishley was on the radio a few years later talking about his career and got onto the subject of transfers. He said he never got involved in the price discussions, said he wasn't tough enough of a negotiator. The example he gave was Bent. Said he wanted him, spoke with the Charlton chairman who said they would offer Town £2m. Curbishley said to the chairman he wasn't happy with that as Bent was worth a lot more and was concerned such a low offer would plss off Ipswich and they wouldn't talk anymore. His Chairman said, don't worry about that, start low and gradually increase, they need the money. He said if he had been doing the discussions he would have started near £6m, as he felt Bent was worth that, minimum. He was then shocked when Town accepted Charlton's 2nd bid of £2.5m. Hence why he never got involved in discussions with other clubs about the price, as he would overpay too often

Oh, I stand corrected. Still far too little. But sadly our hands were tied.

Didn’t George Burley say, sometime later, that if he was aware of the true situation he would persuaded Holland to go to Villa?

Different world back then , when we relegated Man City they lost £8m!

Interesting from Curbishley. I'd be the same as him. At least he was self-aware enough to happily leave that to others.

I dread to think what he paid for his house in Woodbridge.

Bent wanted to go and we needed to sell him that Summer so not entirely surprising that we accepted the offer. We also put in loads of other clauses so made a lot more on the deal.

re: Holland, he didn't so much jump at the chance to go to Charlton but we clearly made it clear then that we needed to sell. Negligent from Sheepshanks not to do the same in the Autumn really.

Charlton also offered Holland a 4 year deal which was his main priority at the time, the length of contract. The money in football was good back then don't get me wrong, but wasn't at today's levels. He was pushing 30 and had spent most of his career outside the top flight, it was a final pay day and you can't blame someone for prioritising that when they have a young family. Had Villa put a more compelling deal to him I know he would've taken it.

Needless to say from the clubs perspective getting £4m from Villa would've been much more favourable than the £800k we took off Charlton 12 months later. Easy to say in hindsight though innit, had we gone back up that season it would've looked like a great decision for player and club.

Might be a case of a story being better than the truth, but I've always told anecdotally that Holland turned down Chelsea, and that signing Lampard was actually their second choice...
