Ashton interview in the EADT 13:07 - May 30 with 8732 viewsIllinoisblue

Not behind the paywall. Nothing really earth-shattering. We went up quicker than expected and got spat out by the prem machine.

For me, the issues are the academy - either we should go full in for Category One or do a Brentford and basically ditch it as IMO it's in limbo right now - and it'd be nice to hear about development of international scouting, even if it's just the planning stage.

I don't even the most negative of fans expected just one home win this season. Or we'd finish on less points than Luton. Thee is still a difference is simply going down and the manner of going down.

The academy is about to gain Category 1 status, it's been well publicised.

Like I said, you seem to be willfully looking for things that are wrong, and even seem blind to the things going right.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

No. Just not blind to the issues this season being solely bad luck.

I don't recall seeing anyone suggest that the disappointing results this season were only down to bad luck, rather that 'acts of God' did play a part.

Oh definitely, though not the sole reason.

Nobody has said the disappointment this season is solely down to bad luck. Please provide a link to anyone who has said that and I’ll happily retract that statement.

As for ‘bring out your dead’ detail to supporters, as far as I’m concerned that’s firstly for Ashton and possibly McKenna and anyone else relevant in the club to explain to the owners and a proper analysis is carried out.

Nobody is glossing over how far off we were and the public are not stupid.

I’m interested in where the club goes from here and the action it takes, but I understand that not everything in a football club is for public consumption any more than any other business. If they do a Marcus Evans, say nothing and let the club die, that’s a different matter.

Who's said, or has even hinted at, the issues this season have solely been down to bad luck?

And if you think Ashton thinks that you're doing him a massive disservice.

I think you've painted yourself into a corner and are just doubling down. Maybe it's a coping mechanism to deal with relegation, I don't know, but much of what you've lobbed into this thread goes against common sense.

I think some - not all - are acting as though the squad discrepancy and injuries are the only reasons why we finished as far back as we did. I think relegation was probably whatever as the gap was too big to bridge.

I did say before I hope they're being more introspective in private. They probably are. As HighgateBlue said, it'd be nice to hear about steps moving forward as well as embracing the positive position the club is in when compared to when Gamechanger took over.

Did you see the first part of the interview? He literally says there are things they'd have done differently.

Like a percentage of any profit on resale.

Not relevant to Delap situation but another wise move, if we ever get in this position again, would be go put a time limit on the release clause, deal must be completed within 14 days off transfer window opening. We could presumably have seen Delap not leaving until the start of next season.

Not saying your suggestions aren't good, but how do you know what clauses are already in Delap's or other player's contracts?

We've come full circle. You've rowed completely back on your points - squad discrepancy isn't bad luck, so you're basically admitting there isn't anyone who thinks our relegation is solely down to bad luck (and Ashton certainly doesn't think that). And you were bemoaning not hearing about what we could've done better and are now saying you "hope they're being more introspective in private. They probably are"!

I'm glad, through this discourse, I've managed to allay your fears. My work here is done!

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
