Burnley's shopping last summer 10:45 - Jun 6 with 1756 viewsSharkey

Looking at their recruitment last summer, it seems remarkable how late it was. I make it 12 players (including 4 loans) who arrived after 22nd August, = after two league games. Notably cosmopolitan too. Scott Parker, gel-supremo.

Their recruitment was spot on. They utilised the French market well and looked for players with good physicality from Brazil like Lucas Pires.

I'm not even sure they'd need O'Shea as I think Esteve and Egan-Riley are really promising centre backs in their own right.

Looks like they spent the thick end of £20m inc. Esteve and Tresor. I'm led to believe we have around £50m-£60m PSR wriggle room to work with, so there's no excuses for not building a similarly strong unit.

When we have some of our fans fretting that we might lose a few players and need to bring quite a few in, this is a helpful reminder to them that squad churn does not necessarily spell disaster. In total, Burnley lost or brought in over 40 players last summer. That's an insane level of squad churn. They also lost their manager. And yet they went up with 100 points. That's the advantage that a bit of time in the Prem and having parachute payments gives you in the Championship.

I read an article yesterday (The Athletic) that they have to make a £20m profit in the latest accounts to avoid a PSR penalty in the PL.

So, they won't be able to go and add a huge amount to their squad this time round without selling first.

For both recent relegations, Burnley have struggled financially, with big loan (banking, not player) repayments due and having to offload players (verging on fire sales both times). I don't think they have yet fully recovered from this.

Last summer they let a huge number of players leave - 21 I think (including loans), and brought in a total of 17 new faces. They obviously recruited well for their return to the Championship, given the financial situation, but probably have a significant headwind on this return to the PL.

From what I can find (probably unreliable), they spent £24m on Esteve and Tresor alone. But your point still stands about the markets we need to start shopping in.

When I mentioned out the 25 players 12 including loans could leave I was given the No chance comments.
I still believe major changes ahead this summer. Now for McKenna to earn his big wages.

you actually said we'd *keep* 10-12 of the players in the squad (>30 including injuries, loans).

so, you said >20 will leave! i still find that unlikely, 12 including loans would be much more plausible...

Where did you say that? I can't recall seeing it.

Many, including myself, have said that around 10-12 will leave, with loanees and fringe players. Certainly not the 21 shipped out by Burnley last summer (which was my point in the previous post).
