I was watching a match in Arnold Muhrens last season with us and the commentator mentioned that he was out of contract and that Ipswich still had hopes of persuading him to sign a new one.
No Bosman in those days, so can anyone remind me why we let him go without compensation from United?

Yes i think it was a gentleman's agreement with Muhren as farkenhell says.
I think Thijssen's exit was more fraught, I think there was a bit of a row over it and he was dropped. Maybe his agreement wasn't honoured in the same way as Muhren's. |  |

I may be wrong, but I think Robson had already left for the England job when Thijssen left. By then we were haemorrhaging (sp) players so I wouldn't be surprised if there was some degree of unpleasantness with more than one who left. For example, I seem to recall Mariner pushed to leave and there was something fishy going on with Brazil (who went to Spurs for £450k, played for a year in their reserves, then transferred to Man Utd for £600k). It was well documented at the time that a number of the senior players didn't get on with Bobby Ferguson and, of course, the club was broke and trying to get rid of expensive player contracts. | | | |

I know Brazil and O'Callaghan didn't get on with Ferguson, and I'm pretty sure Osman was benched by Ferguson towards the end of his time here (Cranson started very well in his place but even so, Osman was the better player). I just seem to recall something with Thijssen but memory is sketchy | |
