Me too, he just seems like a very odd fit. Getting strong Sven/2000s vibes - good foreign club manager, talented England squad but he doesn't seem to have a clue what to do with them. I thought the appointment of Southgate was supposed to represent a different approach, with young English coaches coming into the set up at various age levels and being prepared for eventual succession, ensuring a gradual progression of players.
I guess the utter desperation for a quick tournament win so our bigwigs can truly preen and stroke themselves off at the top table, has resulted in that being dumped in favour of the potential of jam today..
Not going so well at the moment, but it must be a devil’s job motivating that bunch when the beach rightly calls. [Post edited 10 Jun 21:56]

Southgate overachieved. Sven massively underachieved.
Worth remembering we were a total shambles post Keegan and actually did occasionally play ok under Sven. Like:
- Had some good moments in Japan in 2002

And I take yours - I liked him too in many ways. Getting us to the 2002 World Cup was a miracle after the shambles he inherited and we were a bit unlucky at that tournament with some major injuries, a horrible group and meeting the eventual winners in the quarter finals. Also a bit unlucky in Euro 2004 - Rooney was on fire and had he not got injured we might have gone all the way. 2006 was very disappointing though.
All in all a good man, decent coach, but could never quite get it right with England. Mind you, can anyone? | | | |

Looks like I was a bit optimistic thinking it would take 6 months lol. It was crazy how people turned on Southgate. He was by far the most successful manager since Sir Alf. It seems all a bit BCWYWF to me. I don’t particularly care, but it’s so predictable. | |
