Fifa, the Club World Cup and Saudi Arabia 14:12 - Jun 14 with 1419 viewsMark

This article summarises the situation nicely.

In the latest "What can possibly go wrong when Sports-washing Saudi Arabia takes over your sport?" the Formula 1 Driver's Steward Derek Warwick has been suspended for one race because he made "unauthorised comments on Social Media".

What was his crime? Posting a rainbow emoji? Asking questions about abducted and murdered journalists? Questioning the ethics of continued oil extraction during a Climate Crisis?

No, none of those.

He said that the decision of the stewards in the previous race was correct.

It's the equivalent of Howard Webb saying "The VAR referee made the correct decision" and explaining why.

FIFA corrupt? Surely not.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

I also just read that fans in the stadiums are being moved into seats facing the cameras so that the grounds look less empty on TV.

I think there is another level beyond that article, because beyond the DAZN money being a bail-out, it looks like a deliberate vehicle to distribute massive sums of money to clubs in smaller markets.
The outcome is likely to be that those markets become ridiculously uncompetitive really quickly. With the result that the clubs wont see any benefit in their domestic leagues, whilst the leagues wont want them because of their domination.
With the likely result that they will be pushed/attracted more to some sort of Fifa Super League, where they get better competition and regular access to that sort of money. And eventually it will leave the European clubs looking on and realising that they are the only ones not in it and decide to jump on board too.

Which basically is a world super league to replace the Champions League, run by Fifa and with Saudi Arabia with a key supporting role (or possibly more than that).

It might not take that long either- its already evident that the Copa Libertadores is completely disrupted by the money the Brazilian teams have in comparison to the other countries and the Brazilian League itself is surely going to start to stratify too.

Saudi (and to a lesser extent, Middle Eastern) influence does no favours to both club and international football.

Look at the upcoming fourth round World Cup qualifiers for Asia - Saudi, Qatar, Iraq, Oman, Indonesia are in the pot yet lo and behold FIFA and the AFC has given hosting rights to Saudi and Qatar. Shouldn't games like these be played in a neutral country i.e. Japan, S Korea, China etc. instead?

You could well be right there. The financial distortion will be huge.

Is anyone outside the fans of clubs involved remotely interested in the competition.
I've only heard two people I know mention it and they are both armchair fans.
From the couple of discussions they have tried to start, no one seemed even slightly interested.
Maybe it's just me but I need my summer breaks away from football to recharge.
I get that money will be thrown at the events but football is about atmosphere.
It's like trying not to laugh when you see pro footballers signing 'championee' whilst being given a ticker tape medal during a four team pre season tournament

I don't imagine many actual supporters of the teams will travel to the USA, so I guess the stadiums are full (half full) of neutrals, there to take selfies.

Another point to make is that we already have a summer football competition, with the Women's Euro 2025 next month in Switzerland. I will watch the England matches and hope we do well.
