FAO DJR/Stokie 14:02 - Jun 17 with 671 views | nrb1985 | and any others who might find this of interest Thought I'd share here following our rather spirited debate a few weeks ago (it's been in most media outlets this am) https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-06-17/reeves-weighs-reversing-non-d Whether we agree that having wealthy individuals and families paying their tax in the UK is important or that it's somewhat inconsequential as a small piece of the pie, never the less something fairly significant is obviously happening under the surface for this to be considered coming so quickly on the heels of the fuel allowance U turn. Anecdotally, it was suggested to me that this being considered because they're begun to receive official numbers on the amount of leavers and it's obviously considerably worse than what they or the OBR forecast. Official numbers won't be released to the public until next year so I have no way of verifying that but would make sense.

My bad. This should work: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2025/jun/17/reeves-inheritance-tax-non-dom- Reversal potentially of some of non dom stuff relating to IHT. Most ppl believe this is because they’re now getting real figures relating to people leaving which are considerably worse than they forecast. That was a he general gist of the previous thread/debate I refer to.

For balance from the article There have been reports of an “exodus” of wealthy individuals from the UK, although these have been questioned by some analysts – including in a recent study from the thinktank the Tax Justice Network. The TJN’s chief executive, Alex Cobham, said: “We’ve only just laid bare the nonsense of one claimed ‘millionaire exodus’ and along comes another – it’s almost as if the lobbyists for not taxing extreme wealth don’t actually care about the evidence. “The chancellor has access to by far the best data on taxpayers’ decisions, so she will know better than anyone just how little millionaire migration actually takes place. It’s well past time to stop listening to the self-serving fairytales of the City.”

Those are opinions and if you were able to click through the links in the FT and Bloomberg article you’d find a raft of opinions and quotes from people in my industry and those associated arguing the opposite. The point wasn’t really whether the opinions offered or quoted were right or wrong as we can’t prove that until next year. However, what is clear is that pretty much every media outlet is carrying this so it must be on the table. And I’m unsure for what reason that could be other than the fact they can see the numbers now and they are considerably worse than the 10% they or so they predicted would leave. This would tally with my own first hand experience also. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

That doesn’t appear to be the gist of it. The article actually says evidence shows there hasn’t been the exodus falsely reported by political lobbying. Also that the main aim is to attract inward investment.
