Was the reason for new contract to get rid of any release clause? As he was already on 4 year contract

We get rid of the release clause, he gets higher wages than the 40% reduced ones in his previous deal following relegation. Show of commitment from both parties for the season ahead.

Why would he accept that contract? There's got to be something in there he wanted...

You could both be right, the original contract had a reduction on relegation, the new one increases them, but still below the PL level.

One would assume a new contract has things that work for both parties. I expect there will be some form of release clause in most young (as in below 30) players' contracts. This may be dependent on non-promotion, etc. too. It will always be finding a balance that attracts all parties to sign it.

With delap, mass, and burgess leaving this probably frees up some wages to improve other contracts

I’m told that not every player had relegation salary cuts baked into their contract so maybe he was one of those, and we’ve “bought him out” of that with a longer deal, better bonuses and a promise of more if we go up? Does seem a weird deal of what I’ve suggested is true…
