Controversial thread maybe 22:20 - Jul 1 with 1815 views | TractorWood | Any thoughts/advice on small touches or bigger stuff you've seen or done at weddings that have gone down really well or badly? E.g I mentioned a cake made of cheese (not a cheesecake) instead of a traditional cake the other day and a buddy said it's the worst idea in history as it will be a crumbly mess....

That really kicked off the rest of the night. Needless to say the marriage was quickly annulled. Remember it is about what you want, and you don't need to go overboard or keep adding stuff and including this that and the other. Originally my wife wanted to get married where there were going to be other weddings all day at this venue. I managed to find a local barn in the countryside that was just us. We kept it rustic and simple. Everyone had a cracking time as there was no curfew on timings etc. My wife realised and still says that was the best idea I ever came up with. We hired a coach to take and return the guests who wanted to get merry. It was all about us, it was the best day of my life which has been equalled with the birth of my two sons. You do spend the whole day with everyone else other than your betrothed but then you have the rest of your life with them so one day does not matter. Also we had a honeymoon where surprisingly it was just the two of us so we got to spend a whole month together. Looking back I would not change one thing.

For our wedding favours we did shot glasses with our name and date engraved on them - proved to be really popular and even now 13 years later we get people say to us that they still use them and it reminds them of the day as they are in their shot glass drawer etc for parties

We had them at our wedding in 1999 and took them on our honeymoon to get them developed. We were so keen to see the pictures we dropped off about 6 of them at a photo processing shop in Boston on a one hour service. Cost a flippin' fortune but we spent a nice afternoon in a cafe looking through the pictures. One of the best things we did was give the DJ a playlist and tell him to stick to it or risk not getting paid. |
On the DJ/music front, we asked our guests to let us know a song they'd want playing (upon the RSVP) which we ended up giving to the DJ, that way it was music catered to everybody rather than just a certain era/genre. Went down really well.

Maybe more boxes tucked away that get dragged out every now and again!

Maybe I'm too much of a music snob, but there was no way we were doing that! Someone would have asked for Hi Ho Silver Lining, Come on Eileen, something from Grease etc. In fact, our mates would probably have done that merely to take the mick! The Welsh male voice choir, who turned up in the hotel bar on their way home from an engagement somewhere nearby, was an unexpected but welcome surprise.

Controversial thread maybe on 09:06 - Jul 2 by Swansea_Blue | And/or you can hire a photo booth with a bunch of fancy dress stuff for the evening. A bit tacky maybe, but it gives people something else to do and always seems popular (based on my massive experience of seeing one once). |
I've been to a wedding reception with a photo booth too. Seems to work well when you get to that time in the evening before the serious dancing starts but the food consumption has tailed off. Also an excuse to cram as many people into a photo booth as possible.
