Plus that was the summer of Paul Cook: Demolition Man (planned even before Evans' departure). There was a lot of squad upheaval, boosted by the advent of Gamechanger money arrived and babies may have gone along with the bathwater. |
Nothing against Downes, but why are we making out he was pushed out of the door. I don't feel Downes has any real deep affinity to the club. He wanted to leave a year before when he was playing his best football for us and Palace came calling.... and we should have parted company then. He was ambitious and wanted to get away to further his career... and I don't hold grudges for that.His true football love is West Ham and I would say he'd probably prefer to hook up again with Martin at Rangers than us.

What's his contract situation? Seems odd Saints would let me move to a rival?
Certainly better than what we have now but is he good enough for the PL? |
We aren't going to sign PL ready players in the Championship. We'll be signing players who may have the potential to play at that level and Downes falls into that bracket, imo. |  |

He has, but I wouldn't say he's established himself as a PL player. Ben Johnson had more PL appearances than that for West Ham and he didn't look a PL quality player for us last season. Morsy must have 35 PL appearances to his name now and much as I rate him, he's not a PL quality CM. | |
