A12 Chelmsford to Marks Tey widening axed on 09:54 - Jul 9 by Trequartista
Was it really necessary though ? It’s not a road that grinds to a halt unlike the roads in Ipswich which are desperate for a northern bypass.
Good question. Not perhaps today but certainly in the near future. The number of times Sat Nav diverts me off that section through villages and along country lanes is increasing,
The high cost was because of a complete new section by passing Rivenhall and continuing to the north of Kelvedon. Would certainly have been easier to upgrade A120 from new A12 to Braintree.

I go between Marks Tey and Witham 2-3 days per week. I usually aim to be through it heading south and at Witham before 6:30am, and heading home is usually after 7:30pm.
Traffic certainly starts to slow from about 6am, and is crawling from around 7am but is rarely at a standstill. Can't comment on the section between WItham and Chelmsford as I only go that far every 2-3 weeks.

Chelmsford to Witham is already 3 lanes per carriageway - not sure why they would widen that bit.

Every time I see that a road improvement scheme somewhere in the country has been given the go-ahead I think - "That's got to be a monumentally bad road if it's getting done before the A120 from Braintree to the A12"
I think we'll all be using jet packs before the A120 sees improvements.

It goes down to two lanes at Hatfield Peverel.
It's a massive bottleneck from about 5pm during the week, miles of tailbacks.
That was one of the issues the proposal was originally going to address, plus a total redesign of the entry and exit issues at both HP and Witham. The current slip roads for both towns are inadequate.

I used the A120 myself a couple of weeks ago for the first time in a couple of years as I left Braintree/Bocking, approx 3pm.
It was total carnage and didn't appear to be any roadworks or incidents affecting things.

Ah yes isn’t that where that bridge over the a12 is where the “temporary” traffic lights have just celebrated their 10th birthday. The excuse to not fix the bridge was that it wasnt worth it if the road was going to be widened anyway.
Forget about much happening in this area, Labour will concentrate on places like Manchester where Andy Burnham resides and of course they have little in the way of transport there don't they. All part of the sweetener so they forget about HS2 whilst Towns like Ipswich clogged up continually because the Orwell's always shut. Perhaps Mr. Zero % Milliband thinks that east Anglia is just a place where he can stick pillions across, fill fields with solar panels and that will sort pollution in the Ipswich area. Richardhead.

So now they can fix it.
That's the Witham exit onto the A12, but yes.
They also employ a man to sit in his van all day "monitoring" the traffic lights.
Tremendously efficient.

It made me laugh when i read about it for multiple reasons. It would be a one-way road with no need for lights apart from one business off the slip road needs to get back into Witham.
And who made that precise estimation that the bridge can take one lane of traffic but not two lanes of traffic, which would never be two lanes anyway apart from when someone comes back over the bridge from aforementioned business!
