In hindsight, absolutely not. If he was even remotely successful (top half, outside the play offs etc) it might have changed things enough for Evans not to sell up.

Looking back, we really do have lots of people to thank for their sheer incompetence which contributed to the perfect storm of Evans selling.

Truly impaired.

Hard to say but everyone was doomed to failure whilst ME was still in ultimate control.

Presumably he wasn't successful enough at Sunderland or there long enough to make him persona non grata for Newcastle?

I agree Matt. I don’t think Guardiola, Klopp or anyone else could have done much with an owner like Evans. It’s why despite the dreadful football and comedy punts on apology players (stand up Polish Pete and Cokey) McCarthy deserves a lot of credit for keeping us up and even being vaguely competitive for a couple of seasons.

Ross? Sunderland were in almost as big a mess as us at the time and he proved to be as hopeless as Hurst. I’m sure the Sunderland supporters will give him a big round of applause if he shows up at the SoL this season. Maybe not.

There were a lot of people who thought he’d be a better bet. In hindsight, he’s not done that much since. He seems to have one decent season and then it falls apart early in the next one. He hasn’t been able to pin a job down for any length of time and seemingly has’t been able to find work for several years (unless he chose to take a break). Not quite dodged a bullet territory, but as others have said I suspect we’d have continued the decline irrespective of the manager.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?
