Will be interesting to see if the new '8 second rule' for goalkeepers will be invoked by refs and award a corner. '6 second rule' was always generally ignored. They were going to make it a yellow card for a second offence, but that has now been changed to frequent breaches of that law.

It’s been trialed in a number of leagues globally, including the UK, and enforced relatively strictly to good effect. I think we will see it enforced much more strictly now. The issue previously was the award of an IFK in the penalty area. That’s difficult to manage as a referee and arguably gives an unfair advantage to the opposing team. A corner is far easier to manage and less likely to lead to a goal.

They need to revert back to the old style of dropped ball. Two players facing each other, with only a ball width between them, then drop the ball. That always gave you the chance of thumping your boot into the shins of the other players. This standing feet away from each other is crazy

Will go the same way as the additional time a couple of seasons ago, start strict and by the end of the season barely enforced.

That would essentially be pointless in this day and age. It would just result in an instant freekick to whoever came off worse!

I dunno, I get the feeling this one might stick. The additional time was bonkers. 10-15 minutes of additional time in matches has some serious knock-ons for most involved.

Yellow cards for keepers holding on to the ball were never going to work either. what ref is going to give a red card to a keeper for time wasting? It's far too harsh a punishment.

A corner kick is a much more suitable punishment as the offending team lose the ball, and there is a slight chance that they may end up conceding because of the time wasting. You will find that the time wasting of keepers will soon stop.

The same should be applied to throw-ins too. It would soon stop the faking of throw-ins by one player, only for him to drop the ball and let someone else slowly wander over to take it. Give the taking team 15 seconds, if it's not taken in that time, the throw-in is turned over.

Personally I think after 8 seconds of holding the ball the ref should have the ability to remove one of the GK’s limbs

It’d cut it out once and for all IMHO

With the ‘kicker’ running the risk of a red card for dangerous play.

It would still be possible for them to waste time, in fact, that would probably create quite a lengthy injury break. Better off just removing their head in the first instance, this would stop the time wasting DEAD!

Anything that stops Jordan Pickford from diving on top of the ball and then doing that silly smile to the cameras is fine by me.
