It's not boring, but it is fatiguing. Because new horrors are daily and we can do nothing other than reading about it.

I feel guilty about it, but there's days where I just want zero world news, for my mental health

Meanwhile in Israel, the media (with the exception of Haaretz) and public are turning a blind eye.

This from an opinion piece in today's paper.

"Gazans die while Israelis watch TV

For eight hours, Hala Arafat, 35, shouted out for help and sought to be rescued along with 14 of her relatives, including seven children, who were buried under the ruins in a bombing in the Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza’s Old City. Her brother-in-law even filmed her cries, but the IDF prevented rescue services from reaching her, and anyone who tried to help was attacked by drones.

At night, when I saw these pictures, I was unable to sleep because of the shame. Of course, there are those who will justify the attack with its “target” and objective, but whoever dares to look at the pictures of the damage caused to innocent people will certainly feel the punch to the gut.

In contrast, most of the Israeli public doesn’t want to see and doesn’t want to know. The main media outlets – except for Haaretz – are violating their journalistic responsibilities as they hide the state’s actions in Gaza from the public. I searched for Hala’s story on one of the channels and couldn’t find it. Life goes on as normal in Israel: The television screens switch from “Big Brother” to “The Masked Singer” while the Air Force carries out another war crime

The entire Israeli media is going crazy over the massacre of the Druze in Syria – for good reason – but at exactly the same time, Israel is killing every day and every night masses of Palestinian civilians, women, children, young people and adults, with no one being brought to justice. Just an hour’s drive from Tel Aviv, hungry children are crying out for food – and we are watching another recipe in the Winning Kitchen show.

“The most moral army in the world” is carrying out war crimes in the name of the Israeli government, and except for a small minority in the country, Israelis have no problem with it. In the name of the October 7 massacre and in the name of the hostages, we have gone blind. We’ve closed our ears and hearts, become stiff-necked. As a discussion in the television studio about the “humanitarian” ghetto or “voluntary” expulsion carries on – we booked a flight abroad, a restaurant reservation or a theater ticket – or just plain laid down on the couch in front of another reality show.

I have no expectations from the right-wing, but where is the liberal camp? Where has it disappeared to? How can they sleep at night without hearing the cries of Hala Arafat? How long will the campaign of revenge, which includes sacrificing hostages and soldiers, continue? When will we say we’ve had enough? Israel has lost all restraint and every moral standard."

That’s understandable. It’s easy to feel helpless, and we mainly are. There are some things we can do though.

This short articles gives an idea of how anyone in the UK can make a difference, even if it’s only by building friendships and peaceful relationships in our own communities. Don’t let the hate spill over here. There have been steep rises in both antisemitism and Islamophobia since the latest escalations in the Middle East. https://www.quaker.org.uk/blog/what-you-can-do-to-help-stop-the-genocide-in-gaza

It’s from a Quaker viewpoint, so not all will resonate with people. But there’s a lot of good practical stuff, like how to write to your MP, checking we’re not personally supporting companies than are helping to fund/supply the atrocities. Their suggestion for the content of a letter mirror those already published by international aid bodies (e.g. https://msf.org.uk/article/gaza-msf-uk-calls-uk-government-act-stop-genocide).

And there are plenty of organised protests as well - via these and letters we do need to pressurise our government to stop funding a genocide. Despite the media fear stories, the protests seem very peaceful and uneventful but do get social media and press coverage (in the fringe press like Byline Times).

Murdering evil bastards hiding in plain sight.

Would 'the people' twenty five or fifty or a hundred years ago have tolerated what we see in the world today? Not just the evils of a Western-sponsored nation murdering civilians and bare-facedly lying about it day after day after day after day, but the destruction of our life-supporting planet.

We do 'we' just sit and let it happen?

Are we just a species led by ruthless yet pointless power and wealth hoarders who get away with more and more obscene acts while the bulk of us close our minds and suck the tit, or flaccidly sit there thinking it's all some kind of video game and it'll all be alright? Or do we think The Matrix was gospel and none of it matters?

100% this.

It is good to be aware and I am sure there are little things we can do that make some small difference but the sentiment is spot on.

This is the picture mentioned in the article.

And this is from Gideon Levy's article on the incident.

"One eye is closed, the other open. One hand grips the wall that has fallen on her. She is trapped in the ruins, her head and body held tightly. She has been like that all night. A light bulb is thrown next to her, and she tries to grab it; maybe it will save her. She loses her grip on it.

Then she raises her hand, in a sign that she is alive. She fights to say her words, “Save me, I’m tired. I cannot [go on].” With her last strength, she says, “Please, please, save me.” These are her last words. “Speak, Hala, speak,” her brother-in-law, Anas, tries to coax her, but in vain. Her eyes close.

It’s not clear how long she lived after that picture. On Tuesday (July 15), Nir Hasson wrote on X, “This woman is called Hala Arafat. She is 35. Since 2 A.M., she and 14 other members of her family, mostly children, have been beneath the rubble of their Zarqa Street house in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood. I spoke with her brother-in-law, who said that anyone who tried to approach her was attacked by drones. If anyone has an idea how to help, this is the time.”

The IDF Spokesperson’s Office didn’t bother to respond to Hasson for 12 hours. What’s the hurry? Later, the spokesperson mumbled something about “lack of coordinates.”

Hala died in unimaginable agony with her husband and four children. Fourteen members of their family, seven of them children, were killed in the bombing of their home.

They’re not the only family that was slaughtered on Tuesday. The Azzam family – Amir, Rateb, Karim, and four babies – was also destroyed. The images of the four infants’ deaths, lying on their backs in white shrouds with their faces exposed, are among the most difficult. One of the infant’s faces is lacerated.

There are social media accounts that have become slaughterhouse diaries. Every Israeli [and American] must now look straight at them. Let feelings be hurt, let soft and sensitive souls be shocked; no image from the Gaza Strip should be censored. This is no snuff film; it’s the reality that must be seen.

Hala’s last words and the helplessness to save her are unforgiving. A woman trapped in the rubble of her home should rouse a strong wish to save her. But the situation prompted the IDF’s launch of killer UAVs to liquidate the rescuers, as happened Wednesday on Zarqa Street in Gaza City.

According to reports, the IDF shot anyone who approached. Daring women soldiers were at the joystick, or were they soldiers playing their game of death against anyone who tried to attempt a rescue?"

Sadly, these won't be counted amongst the dead because they'll never reach the hospital morgue.

Zero out the news - I 100% have days where I have to do the same.

Did it always used to be like this, are we "softer" now or is there just more access to news, and crappy news sells?

There is a lot more exposure to it than there used to be. The widespread access to recording media and instant ability to upload and share it makes it thus as much as anything.

There is an argument that over-exposure hardens us to it. However, there is also a degree that in the past we would have experienced personal hardships more often and so would have been toughened by that.
