When did transfer fees at this level get SO crazy? 11:15 - Aug 14 with 1017 viewsChris_ITFC

As much as I love him, £10m for a really good (but not exceptional) player at this level, and particularly with less than 12 months on his contract, seems incredible business to me. At 27, he’s only played 1.5 seasons at this level, plus a peripheral role in the Prem.

I think he’s brilliant, but £10m? Obviously our fees exploded on promotion, but prior to that, £1m seemed a lot to us!!

Or are teams just rinsing Wrexham, because they have the money, but can’t attract the players actually worth that sort of money?

the synchronicity that Broadie has with Wrexham won't apply to too many. Some people these days do seem to demand very expensive wedding presents if you want to be at the party.

Thought the same last year when we paid 7million for Ogbene. Not knocking the lad as the fee is largely a reflection of how desperate we were (are?) and having to pay a promotion tax. But still. It’s a ridiculous fee. More so when compared to what we paid for Burns.

When you look back at some ogbene highlights there's a rapid and bloody good winger there.

We've had him injured and at the moment doesn't look anyway near match fit to be what he was. It'll take time.

Would wager compared to a lot of stuff football transfer fees inflation is broadly in line with other things.

What’s the price of eggs in your local Walmart these days?!

Not so. Transfer fees (& wages) are all related to the explosion in football's TV income. The Premier League now earns over £3bn annually from TV. When the Premier League started, it was £300m. And that was a massive uplift on the £10m or so that the Football League got from TV before the PL was formed.

Yeah, his fee went under the radar a bit.

Ogbene had a better Prem season though. Plus we were a Premier League team! Wrexham have just been promoted from League 1!

There’s been a noticeable jump this year in the Championship. Presumably tied to the new TV deal?

think it's a mixture of TV deal, rising transfer fees above the Championship meaning Champ clubs often have transfer revenue to re-invest and... clubs learning how FFP book-keeping works (and that one sale can finance several purchases in the immediate term).
