Alex Palmer and Dara O'Shea can't play out from the back as effectively as Vaclav Hladky and Luke Woolfenden did. Jens Cajuste doesn't cover the left-back or defend like Massimo Luongo did, but instead has more skill on the ball. Jack Clarke likes to stay wider than Nathan Broadhead. Sammie Szmodics makes runs into the box like a second striker where Conor Chaplin links play better.
We clearly have a team of more talented players than we did for the last promotion. But it feels like half of them are playing in a formation that doesn't suit their skills, and instead suits the players they replaced. The big strength of the 2023-24 squad was that every player was in a role that perfectly suited their skills, complemented each other and got the absolute best out of every player. So does McKenna need to come up with a new formation/system for these new players? Any ideas what that could be? |  |

I think you've summed up the differences really nicely. Are we seeing Leif sometimes come into MF and Clarke/Philogene stay wider when we're building from the keeper? Do we then have Matu and Leif and Jens drawing opponents in and collecting from Palmer, with the RB pushed on and DoS wider? A sort of mirror version of what we used to do? Dunno.
Does it look like Matusiwa will play more across the ptch than Morsy did and take the load of covering for Davis when he's away, allowing Cajuste to hand over that Luongo role? |  |

I think Dara is fine, the issue really is with Palmer for me. Too slow on the ball, not got the long range of passing Hladky/Muric has. |  |

We made adaptations in 2023/24, going from being a team that always dominated possession in League 1 to being a side that could mix it up. Last season, we took that even further and played direct more often. I imagine we'll continue to adapt how we play to get the best out of the players we have. |  |
