£40m off the bench 10:05 - Aug 24 with 2314 views | suffolkpoker | Interesting comment from Preston’s manager. How did he get to £40m in player purchases from Our subs? I know people like to put a positive spin on things..

£40m off the bench on 11:49 - Aug 24 by Marshalls_Mullet | I think its a perfectly fair comment from their manager. |
Yes, I do. His presser very much reminded me of plenty of Mick McCarthy press conferences.
£40m off the bench on 12:07 - Aug 24 with 229 views | mellowblue | plucked a number out of thin air to emphasize his team's achievement. I am sure he has more to do than accurately calculate the opposition's bench value.

Yes, reading it back, he sounds very defensive which surprised me. Is he getting similar criticism from Preston fans than Mick got here towards the end?

£40m off the bench on 11:44 - Aug 24 by OsmansCleanSheet | The context that a team that earned over 100 points ‘wasn’t all that.’ Gotcha. |
Sorry fat fingers. Agreed completely. Not sure why Plymouth struggling in the Champ means they weren't sensational the year before. Scored so many deflections and long range shots, rode their luck really well. It's been mentioned that Town were pushing them on and driving them to those performances.

£40m off the bench on 10:31 - Aug 24 by darkhorse28 | Who cares what he thinks. The broader point. We spent £170 million and a champions league contract to KM to find out a very inexperienced manager. Is very short in some areas. That’s not his fault. That’s 100% Mark Ashton. And the consequences. Selling lots of players, to help a club sale, and still a very expensive squad, who in terms of team dynamic will never get even close to 23/24. Our coach still thinks every problem in the world is solved on the training pitch, that’s his bubble. It’s NOT.., all elite clubs success are built off the field in strategy, vision, recruitment OFF and on the pitch and understanding what their own failures are. £170 million and counting, to be worse then a team costing £10 million or less that had players who’s profiles were a perfect fit. We didn’t know why we were succesful.., and that was the seeds of our long term failure. And that’s literally what we pay Ashton for.., to understand that, or have people around him that do. He was always ‘pretty good’ but a light year away from elite .., even at top end EFL standards. When a Plymouth side with a third our budget, that aged extremely badly (as a form guide) achieved more than us, it was a clue. We needed better support around McKenna.., then Ashton started believing the media hype, and couldn’t see the wood from the trees. New owners will bring new directions.., and with it new hope.., we go again. McKenna - not sure, but he needs the right people around him, and that probably is another club right now. We need a more complete manger shirt term, and work HARD to build the structure where a talented young coach can thrive. |
There’s actually some quite valid points in all of that, even though some of it I would challenge as well. The big hope for me is this squad is good enough to get us or promoted this year. If that happens, to be honest I’d considering ripping it up again rather than building around what we have. Outside of a few, I just don’t see many premier league talents in all the tens of millions we’ve spent from the EFL. That will obviously be a good problem to have and as of now is far from certain. Hopefully it would be done by a brand new recruitment team and model. Gut feeling after looking at the windows post promotion is that Ashton is out of his depth at the higher levels in this day and age. Not sure if he’s believed some of our own hype but some of the players through the door are questionable in terms of profile and tactically to how we play.

Not looked into it but I suspect their fans are looking at the money spent elsewhere and feeling a bit envious and maybe a bit concerned that their squad might not be strong enough. I suspect the last two results will have allayed some fears, even if I think they may have caught Town and Leicester at a good point in the season.
