So what to do? Building connections suggests more of the same, but bench players seem to be offering more to the side. I can think of five changes immediately to switch up the team and offer something different, ignoring my penchant for a back three. Would it work? Or will it just cause more issues in terms of connections?

Palmer
Young - O'Shea - Kipre - Davis
Matusiwa - Cajuste
Ogbene - Chaplin - Szmodics
Akpom

Subs: Walton, Johnson, Greaves, Humphreys, Taylor, Clarke, Philogene, McAteer, Hirst

You know that isn't going to happen. I do like it in theory but it isn't what McKenna plays and we know he isn't about to change that.

Also, if we did go with that I think it would be McAteer and Philogene with Ogbene and Clarke replacing them that would play wide up front. That rather leaves Szmodics and Chaplin being shoehorned in or changing the system to accommodate them if they do play. It would make Akpom the change for Hirst that we clearly need but it appears as if he hasn't been brought in to play that role.

Depends on how the game goes, but my threepennies' worth on what McK will play:

Palmer
Johnson (Young 67) - O’Shea - Greaves - Davis
Matusiwa - Cajuste (Taylor 75)
McAteer (Ogbene 67) - Szmodics (Akpom 80) - Philogene (J Clarke 67)
Hirst

Subs: Walton, Young, Woolfenden (if still here), Kipre, Taylor, Ogbene, Chaplin, J Clarke, Akpom

FWIW, McKenna's subs this season in EFL (position of player being withdrawn):

Brum (trailing): 68 (RB, RW, CF*), 79 (LW), 85 (CM)
Soton (all square): 71 (RW, LW), 72 (CM), 86 (RB, CM)
PNE (trailing): 66 (RB, RW, LW), 77 (CM, CF)

2 or 3 sets of subs between 66 and 86:
first set 66-71
second 72-79
third 85-86

5x subs per game (15 total)
3x RB (68, 86, 66) [3x BJ withdrawn]
4x CM (85, 72, 77) [3x AM, 1x JT]
3x RW (68, 71, 66) [2x JC, 1x CO]
3x LW (79, 71, 66) [2x JP, 1x JC]
2x CF (68, 77) [2x SS]

Other observations: (1) Matusiwa hasn't played 90 yet (adjusting to EFL); (2) BJ/AY on rotation; (3) in the first tranche, we've brought 3 on when trailing, 2 when level; (4) that first tranche has always featured a winger; (5) CM has always been substituted (usually AM) but only after 70 mins; (6) Clarke has started and been replaced every game (I think he'll feature against Derby but not start); (7) Philogene and Szmodics start when fit (but are usually substituted); (8) no evidence McK will tinker with CB pairing unless injury strikes (regardless of JG errors); (9) JT has started every game but fans want AM/JC pairing and presumably McK too when they're both up to speed (I have no idea if that's Derby, but I hope so); (10) Chappers has come on every game (66-71 mins) - my uncertainty in my prediction above is that it's him rather than Clarke/Ogbene coming on.

Only depicting patterns here, not accounting for in-game factors, form, strengths/threats of the opposing team, etc. People may find it insightful/boring as beige (delete as applicable).
