The starting 11 and bench will be elite for the Championship 16:57 - Sep 1 with 1942 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | Doesn’t win you points but now over to our manager that we all rate so highly. I’m not going to lose sleep as just having Leif as a natural LB. Pretty sure Ashley Young started a World Cup semi final at LB, Johnson can play there and so can Humphreys. Davis is incredibly robust as well. Matisuwa back up maybe as a true 6 might have been handy but Nunez can do it if we need to and not sure we’d find a bench player better than that. Ok it’s not the perfect balance overall but you can’t name everyone on your bench, it looks fine to me with options all over the park. We simply have to find our best front 4 to consistently start games and kick on! With Nunez creativity, a strong Akpom in the 10 and players running off him we could have something special that no one has even seen yet. I’d have loved the defender in from Mexico and I’m not sold on McAteer, other than that none of us really know how it’s going to shake out but on paper looks a ridiculous amount of talent to work with at the EFL level.

I think it is fair to say that all of them have been poor so far. We are 20th in the league. That doesn't change the fact all of them have been far better in the very recent past. If they can play as a team and regain the confidence they once had, they are an elite squad for this level. Poor is a relative term. I am sure Johnson would get into most Championship matchday squads. He is definitely one who needs to find and develop partnerships with those he is playing with.

The starting 11 and bench will be elite for the Championship on 18:05 - Sep 1 by _clive_baker_ | Its hard to not get fleeced when you've got deep pockets but the Cajuste deal and obligation is cheap if he stays fit, and on early evidence Matusiwa is good value and Rennes actually sold him at a loss having paid 16m EUR for him. Nunez I don't think is silly money for a 25 year old international. Furlong perhaps a touch too much, but relatively insignificant in the scheme of things. Egeli who knows, it could be a very expensive mistake or a stroke of genius but time will tell on that. McAteer is the only one who really sticks out a bit IMO, he feels every bit an £8m player but other than him I think we've bought fairly well this summer. We've sold quite well too, especially Broady and holding firm on Omari. The biggest mugging is only getting £30m for Delap but our hands were tied on that. [Post edited 1 Sep 18:07]

I would go along with most of that, and I don’t think the window as a whole has been that bad. However as above, I can’t imagine for one minute we expected 4 right backs, Baggott (who McKenna mentioned a few weeks back would be heading out on loan, again) and Jack Taylor (who’s contract runs out in 12 months and will surely be moving on) would form part of our 25 man squad. Certainly not for a parachute payment team who has also recouped £80m ish in player sales either. Something about that doesn’t quite sit right with me, and I can’t put my finger on it. Same goes for keeping Palmer as number 1, feel like that could turn out to be a mistake. And as for our striker recruitment, whilst Azon had a very decent cameo on Saturday, it concerns me that given a month ago we rejected the opportunity to sign him as his medical flagged up issues, we spent another 2-3 weeks looking elsewhere only to end up pulling the trigger on him again. I know the club doesn’t have too, but I would be really interested in a video with McKenna and Ashton like we’ve had in previous seasons, briefing how they felt the summer went and their reactions to the amount of ‘old guard’ who have left the building. I think it’s clear in McKennas comments that the likes of Woolfie and Broadhead irked him with wanting to go. Having a keeper that doesn’t quite befit how we play, a marauding left back now being used almost as a third centre mid, a disjointed 3 behind the striker and 2 strikers with known medical issues feels quite the gamble to me. Let’s hope McKenna can get a tune out of them like previous signings because the longer this ‘run’ goes on without a win - and my god I already dread the reaction if we’re to go a goal down early next Friday - and I fear things might bubble over.
