Cooper, Taricco and Stewart.

I think it is Taricco.

The others were clearly judged on their merits, and either got close to the national side or were kept out by clearly better keepers.

If Taricco had been playing now I’m sure the international exposure of the PL would have got him a number of caps, possibly while playing for Spurs.

Leif is good, but last season revealed his limitations. If he can get back to constant improvement his time might yet come.

I was going to say Cooper, but think Stewart pushes him close. The difference between the two is that Cooper was a top keeper season after season and Marcus wasn't (either for us or anyone else). Coops was never as good as Shilton or Clemence and they rightly kept him out of the England team, but he was consistently one of the top 4 keepers in the top league.

Poll: Right now, who would you rather have as Prime Minister?

Marcus Stewart by a country mile. Paul Cooper was a very good club keeper but nowhere near international level.

If we had Shilton, Clemence or Jennings in goal we would have won the league on more than one occasion.

Agreed re Shilton and Clements - they were better than him. But... had they now been playing he would have been in a shootout with Corrigan for the England shirt. I think he was certainly and easily one of the top four keepers at the time.

Agreed - I always thought this.

Cooper was unfortunate to play at a time that we had so many top quality 'keepers. Having said that, it was a bit of a toss up who was best from the 3 anyway - Cooper wasn't necessarily the 3 best of the 3, it was just timing that saw him not considered as Shilton (1970) and Clemence (1972) were already established before Cooper's heroics in the mid to late 70s

Paul Cooper wasn't even third choice as England keeper behind Shilton and Clemence. Joe Corrigan got caps ahead of him. As did even Chris Woods in 1985.

I would say Cooper, regardless of where he was in the England pecking order.

He played 433 games in the top division, and was not in any way a weak link in what was a team containing 10 internationals.

That's very few to choose from then, since about three quarters of the squad are capped players, and a few others have been active U21s until recently.

Of the few to choose from, and what I've seen so far, I'd go with Matusiwa.
