Morsy vs. Matuswia 13:07 - Sep 13 with 2078 viewsnrb1985

Great game last night, managed to get there in person and really enjoyed it.

Matusiwa was exceptional, really growing into the player we all hoped. The interception for Jack Clarke's goal high up the pitch was almost vintage Kante!

What I would say is, I think comparisons between him and Morsy (as I saw on here last night) are folly in my view. It is clear he has an entirely different role in the team to Sam. And it's noticeable that it's generally Cajuste who now has the role of showing for the GK between the split centre backs.

And in the first half particularly I did think we missed Morsy taking that first pass from the Keeper and driving us up the pitch a bit.

Both are exceptional players at this level but not sure other than playing in CM for ITFC I see much else in terms of similarity of the role they perform for the team (so far).

Just my opinion though.

They play exactly the same role, break up play and then get okay going. Morsy got forward more though but Matusiwa is getting there. Think he is a big upgrade on Morsy

Matusiwa is a phenomenal tackler for me, in that he seems to be very quick in, and then be able to get a legal and effective tackle in from almost any angle. His tackle timing is world class, I would say, from what I've seen of hm so far.

I, too, am a big admirer of Matusiwa's tackle.

Indeed. But a different player to morsy, not so adept at shielding the ball and making a bit of time and space to move it on. Not so inclined to collect it and drive, or hold on until a good pass is on.

Different attributes.

For me, after only 5 league games, Matusiwa is more than on a par with Sam, who was brilliant for us.

Different styles, so from a playing point of view, unfair to compare. I think after a few more games Matusiwa will have really settled in and with Cajuste, who I think is exceptional and way above Championship standard, will be the best pairing in the Championship.

What may be worth comparing is the yellow card count at the end of the season, as Sam was caught out quite often and had to resort to fouling. I don’t think Matiusiwa will get anywhere near as many. That would tell a story.

Brilliant win last night. That should set us up to now go on an unbeaten run.

Pretty much agree with all that.

I just think, like you, like for like comparisons are very valid as on the evidence so far he’s not playing the Morsy role and the team also appears to have set up a bit differently this year too to play more counter attack.

As I said though, thought it was very obvious in first half yday we missed Sam’s ability to take the ball off the GK and turn. Can’t think of too many times in 23/24 when we so clearly struggled to beat a press like that.

Matuswia is an excellent player. Not as influential as Morsy yet, but Ithink he might turn out to be a better player from what I’ve seen of him. Great attitude.

As for partnerships, I’m wondering if Nunez might form a better partnership with Matuswia than Cajuste. I do like the way Nunez goes at teams, wants the ball. Feisty.

Either way, heck of an option to have and it hacks off Norwich supporters, so all we need is a couple of goals from him in the upcoming game and the Oinkun might just explode. What’s not to like?

Personally think that Matusiwa is a better footballer than Morsy was when he arrived here.

Morsy improved each season, imo. Especially his passing range. It's such a shame that we never had him as a 26 year old.
Matusiwa should improve as time goes on. But right now he's being asked to keep it simple, win his tackles and short pass to a creator. (At least, that's how it looks to me)

Of course, Morsy brought a great level of leadership and example to the squad. Such levels in that department are very hard to replicate. I think that just comes naturally to some individuals. And not really something that can be coached.

I like Matusiwa a lot. He knows his role and plays it well.
As mentioned by others, great timing in the tackle. And good positional awareness and reading of the game. Probably slightly more pace than Morsy, too.
He has settled in really smoothly. "Keeping it simple" has helped , imo. Doesn't look like he's been given too much instruction or responsibility at this moment. That may change as we go up the gears.
Although, given the addition of more creativity to our squad. It might not be needed for Matusiwa to burst forwards ala Morsy.
I'd prefer him to remain the anchor and allow Jens, Nunez, Taylor (plus our full backs) to play further up the pitch in games we dominate.

Only comparison I'd compare to Morsy. Is the level of protection they both give to the defence..
Our much loved former CB's. Had many a comfortable game, down to Morsy's graft and organisation.

DOS isn’t a leader like Morsy was either!

I’m not inclined to make a direct comparison. It’s not needed. KMck is building a completely different midfield with new players and different attributes. Morsy was the king. Matisuwa is settling in very nicely indeed.

They play exactly the same role - Different players but exactly the same role. Azor growing every game and now starting to not only win the ball but also collect the ball and pass it. Very impressed with him!
