Can somebody please invent on 07:22 - Sep 16 with 850 views | Plums | 70+ years of computing and a printer and computer still act as though you're trying to mate a cat with a dog. It's incredible how poor the interface between most of them still is. I feel your pain. [Post edited 16 Sep 7:22]

At the risk of coming over all 'I think you'll find', this is generally because the hardware is used as a loss-leader, with the aim of tying you in to a manufacturer's overpriced ink ecosystem. If you compare the cost of cartridge printers with modern equivalents that use ink tanks, it'll give you a good idea of how much printers should actually cost.

And take out the sensor that knows when you’re in a rush and decides to have a paper jam or run out of ink or toner just to troll you. It’s only ever when you’re in a rush…bloody things.

Can somebody please invent on 07:55 - Sep 16 with 714 views | BloomBlue | Inkjet printers, the worst invention ever. Tiny pins which by default clog up if surrounded by thicker liquid and not used regularly (ie daily). It was a known problem when first mass produced in the 80s and 40 years later the issue persists. I wonder how many people have said 'f**k look at that printout, some lines unreadable, some smudged and the last two lines fine'. Then to add to the fun, someone will tell you, its because you've used cheap cartridges. Nope, the same happens with the expensive manufacturer ones.

This is the issue. Best bet is to get a half decent toner printer that will last you, although that's hard to justify if you only need to do the occasional printing. For inkjets, Brother printers are the least awful, and they don't have a fit when you use non-branded cartridges.

I've given up using ours because we use it so infrequently that we only get one or two prints out of each cartridge before it dries up. More cost effective to go to the print shop down the road. | | | | Login to get fewer ads
Can somebody please invent on 09:33 - Sep 16 with 564 views | wischip | If you only print occasionally then get a laser printer instead of an inkjet printer. Inkjets clog up unless they're used frequently, whereas lasers use 'dry' ink instead of 'wet' ink so don't clog up. That's what I've read anyway. I've ditched my 3rd inkjet and now switched to laser. They cost more but hoping for a better return in the long run.

I think that's the way forward, I'm not buying any more. Maybe my fault for buying cheap but when I consider what I've spent on printers and cartridges relative to what I actually print I'm probably averaging somewhere in the region of £5 per page in the past 10 years.
