Today the govt will start the process of introducing a Hillsborough Law 04:25 - Sep 16 with 1228 views | bluelagos | https://politicsuk.com/landmark-hillsborough-law-bill-introduced-to-parliament/ Lots of reports this morning that it will include a duty of candour - to criminalise the type of cover up the police engaged in after the South Yorks police unlawfully killed 97 innocent football fans in 89. Campaigners have been insisting that any proposals must include a duty of candour - so hope all the reports are right in that respect.

Indeed. Police officers queued up and were happy to lie and mislead a public inquiry that was trying to establish the facts of how and why fans died at a game of football. South Yorks and West Mids officers were so corrupt, they had to change the law. That is their legacy.

It's ridiculous isn't it. If you had no idea how inquiries worked and simply thought they weres way to establish the truth of events, and then someone had told you there was no requirement for public officials to tell the truth and no consequences for lying, they'd think you were nuts. It's long overdue.

Today the govt will start the process of introducing a Hillsborough Law on 16:25 - Sep 16 with 99 views | Oldsmoker | I've stayed off the board for a while now but felt I had to say something. My opinion is that for the Hillsborough 97 it is too little and too late. The bill as it stands seems justified and complete but there will be MP's who will want amendments just because. The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022 brought in by the Tories was a step in the wrong direction for our rights as citizens. This bill suggests that there will be some accountability for transgressions by the Police but it doesn't prevent them happening in the first place. There is also a Crime and Policing Bill 2025 going through Parliament as well. None of these bills remove the overreach of the 2022 act which disappoints me.
