He’s always been like that hasn’t he? His analysis is often different from just about everyone reporting on the game. Playing legend obviously but far from it in commentary.

He was as miserable as sin in the after match yesterday. Was nearly at the point of turning him off as he was spoiling my enjoyment of a good performance.

My thoughts exactly. For someone who was not even an half decent manager he certainly likes to point out where we’re going wrong and areas we need to improve in.

He over emphasises the downfall of some of our players, and forgets to praise the upside. Needs to be more balanced for sure , but he played in a team which was pretty much the best in the country so if he bases his opinion on that.....

I’ve not heard his views from yesterday but “not even [being] a half decent manager” has no bearing on his qualifications to asses a game of football.

He's played at the highest level. Captained his club to win an FA and UEFA Cup. Captained his country in a World Cup. So he understands the game very well.

He just didn’t have the ability to get that understanding across or motivate the players he had at his disposal when he was a manager.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Sorry. Meant that to be a down arrow.
He can focus on the negative but is very insightful on tactics etc.

I usually find him to be fairly balanced, perhaps a bit downbeat sometimes. Listening to his post match comments on the way home yesterday though I was wondering if I’d been to the same match. Way too negative in his comments yesterday.

The epitomy of the phrase club legend.
He has every right to express his views (that's what he's there for btw) as we are ours.
I generally love to hear his post match analysis and occasionally I don't agree, yesterday being one of those occasions.
Very few clubs have an ex player of his stature as a summariser, so I'll happily put up with the "you knows" and his occasional curmudgeonous.

Agree with this 100%.

Usually I enjoy his post match analysis whatever the result , but yesterday I thought he was way off the mark.
Didn’t seem to comprehend that the game was won by half time and many a side sit back on a two or three goal lead. That’s why games that are won at half time don’t often get to be 6s and 7s.
If he was expecting another 5 as per the Blades , he isn’t being realistic.

As has been said his tactical insight is usually interesting and gives a different outlook , but when the caller in disagreed with Mills analysis, he then came back on ten or so minutes later and went on to double down on it , which I just knew he was going to do.

Seems to have been a few balanced posters on here who had the same thoughts and even looking at the threads and comments , it seems Mills is definitely in a small minority.

Mick Mills....
why answer a question in one sentence when 102 will do!

Great captain back in the day when I first started going to PR. I seem to remember on the terraces he had the nickname Gladys for some reason

He doesnt do commentary , he's the summariser who comments and helps us understand whats going / gone on. I like him - although he's Ipswich through and through hes not afraid to highlight and explain things that are not quite right - which is what numpties like me need!

So I just listened back whilst walking the dog and I thought he was spot on.

Started by saying how we were far better than Portsmouth, how we were dominating the game. Went on to say what a great goal Jaden scored and how he has a great partnership with Davis. Then said that we needed a second goal before half time which duly came.

What he then said was fair criticism. That having watched that first half of Ipswich domination you wouldn't believe that by the end of the game the stats would show 50/50 possession and Portsmouth completed seven more passes than we did. He was concerned that Cajuste could play like a Premier League player in the first half and be fairly average in the second. That people were going slightly overboard with Kipre's performance and that this isn't the first time this season that our performances have dipped considerably in the second half of games. He also said that there isn't a group of teams running away with the league and this will benefit teams like us who have had a slow start. He also said that we aren't quite there as a team yet but we need to be in November/December onwards.

All fair points I thought.

I always listen to Final Whistle, and always find what Mick Mills has to say is interesting. Indeed, I have a great soft spot for him because he brings back happy memories of my childhood.

And talking of legends, I was sat a few seats away from Terry Butcher in the upper north yesterday. He was sat next to the amputee who runs Combat4Coffee, who was having a video interview next to the Willis building when I was walking to the Greyhound.

Think he whispers SB at the end of each exchange.
