5x5 - Bristol City (A) 12:09 - Oct 1 with 762 views | Chris_ITFC | I’m usually a glass half full, dismissing a lot of the negativity on here, but my head was filled with more concerns last night - so I’m making myself balance it up. 5 X POSITIVES • Matusiwa was SUPERB. He looked an absolute cut above - he’s far more than just a tackler. I was so impressed with the way he technically knitted everything together on the ball, and we absolutely have 2 ball playing midfielders. • Sure, maybe we didn’t win, but that depth is going to win us so many points this season. From Saturday to Tuesday, no other team in the league can just be swapping Philogene for Clarke or Nunez for Cajuste. • Great to see Clarke playing well, with no signs of sulking, dovetailing much better with Davis and showing the confidence and cojones to put the penalty away again. • Another night of Leif looking like himself. He was never going to be making lung bursting runs with Bristol sat so deep, but he could’ve easily got an assist or two on another night. • The fans were superb, great turnout, getting home at 3am. (My only slight gripe is why we’re still singing about an 84 year old woman dying / being a wh*re… and filming penalties.) 5 X CONCERNS • Conceding first is going to be a big risk for us this season. If we go 1-0 down, so many teams are going to sit in and waste time like that - even when they’re a ‘big’ team at home. • The lack of authority and the complete confusion from the bench for the second late free kick was bizarre. McKenna having to turn round to the set piece coach… How has Leif gone from taking every set piece for years to being behind Philogene, Egeli and Furlong? I bloody hope it isn’t so he can defend the counter - it’s an *attacking* free-kick! • Nunez worries me defensively. He presses aggressively, but is too kamikaze. He’s small, so when he didn’t win the ball, he got brushed off a few times and was completely out of the game then, exposing us dangerously. We lack a creative #10, particularly if teams sit in deep, so I wouldn’t mind Nunez higher. • I like Greaves, I think he’s great in the box and defending crosses, and actually, I think he does well to cover the Davis channel, when really he’s quite exposed by that. But oh boy, he just gets blown around by the wind when defending long balls, let alone by the opposition. • The McAteer and Egeli rotation was underwhelming for me. The Bristol left back was decent, but why didn’t McAteer ever spin into the space behind? Everything was to feet and far too predictable. Egeli off the bench is exciting and fun, but he gave away some silly fouls (and almost a penalty) with the enthusiasm, which just disrupted any momentum. He’s young and McKenna will iron that out, but if McAteer is the away game plan, we’ll need more threat from him.

I understand your concerns with letting the first goal in, it can definitely change the way the game plays out and the last two goals let in, were similar corners to just past near post. Think this is an area that Hirst defends well, but he wasn’t on the pitch for either of those goals. An area to work on, if Hirst is off the pitch. I didn’t think Bristol wasted much time, certainly played a low block, and we need to be quicker with passing the ball on the counter attack, we didn’t progress the ball through the thirds quickly enough. With the subs, thought it would have made sense for Philogene to replace McAteer and switch Clarke to the right, would have given Bristol a threat to worry about either side. All in all too many changes, probably 3 too many. We need to get a winning run going.
5x5 - Bristol City (A) on 12:26 - Oct 1 with 602 views | SheffordBlue | On the free kick point I think Leif didn't take them as they were late on and on the opposite side to where he has to defend. I think that increases the risk of being hit on transition if the opposition turn it over - less of a risk early on but I could see why they did that. Furlong ended up taking the 2nd late one and probably should have taken the first I thought - either that or Philogene who has an excellent delivery and would have been less of risk for the counter-attack if they turned it over.

Specific points, a bit of balance, not putting it all on one player or just attacking the world, and most importantly no self aggrandisement and division by adding in ridiculous pathetic 'I've been saying this for months but the happy clappers were having none of it' type nonsense. There are definitely a few posters who could take note. It's not about not criticising, or accepting mediocrity, it's about perspective and not just hitting out and showing off.

totally agree - anyone capable of this immediately sets themselves on a higher level and for me, immediately become someone whose posts i am far more likely to read, than the "i am right/you are all wrong" type of poster.

Yes, thought the same about Clarke going to RW. It would’ve felt a more positive move, and a flex of the muscles we have. A similar reply to the other post about the free-kick - if we consider ourselves one of the best teams in the division, we should have our best free-kick taker (Davis) taking an attacking free-kick, rather than worrying about the opposition. If the other 10 can’t defend without him, something else has gone wrong there.

Yeah, that was my conclusion - there were good things, there were bad things. Greaves, McAteer, Clarke, Nunez, the fans… they can be good, with points to improve. It’s a revolutionary theory, I know! I even took the time to find the flipping bullet points button, so your post is appreciated!

Absolutely agree. Like I say, in the box, he’s so often in the right place, just in time, and his understanding and bravery in that is great. If I was an opposition team though, I’d do exactly what Bristol did - long balls to his side, either in the air, over his head or in the channel. It’s a worry if teams can use such an obvious, easy game plan like that. He needs to be be stronger, because it’s becoming a pattern right back to Kyogo.

Leif also wasn't taking those deep free kicks previously - it was Morsy. I wonder if Nunez would have taken it if he was still on the pitch?

Egeli’s seemed prime Leif territory, considering it was almost an inswinging corner (which he usually takes). Unnecessarily cautious for me.
