Which defensive partnership are you? 17:33 - Oct 1 with 1606 viewsChrisAllen7

Wolfie & Burgess or O'Shea & Greaves?

After nearly a whole season of premier league football and a lukewarm start to this year in the championship, I'm struggling to see how this partnership is any upgrade on what we already had. ( I get they were up against far better players in the Prem. )

The distribution from Woolfie and Burgess in my opinion was by far more accurate and we built up play so much quicker.

Everytime the ball is played behind us I feel sense of panic as well. Maybe an unpopular post but just interested in people's opinion.

….we are building up play slower than previously, but I think a lot of that is down to the goalkeeper and it is improving.

CB and LW had a keeper behind them that was much more confident with his feet and as a result released the ball a lot quicker.

We were hardly solid at the back in our Championship season, we mainly won matches through our attacking prowess rather than our outstanding centre back partnership.

It’s also worth noting that I’m sure DOS and JG would have looked a lot better if they’d have had a season defending against 3rd division strikers.

DOS and JG will become a top level CB partnership pretty quickly in my opinion.

Wolfie currently can’t get a start at Coventry.

This is so true Bloots.

I don;t think that anyone argues that Burg and Wolfie would be good enough in this league - but like you say, they weren't the water tight defence we sometimes think they were.

Nor were the the fastest pair - and i honestly think they'd have been found out a lot more in the Prem that Dara & Greavsie were. Which I think is why KM brought in players he hoped would prevent that.

Personally i do think they are probably better than Wolfie and Burg and last year (and so far this season) the problem has been more the midfield in front of them. Last year we just weren't good enough; this year it;s a fresh midfield and has been settling. i think it will get better. Time will tell!

Interestingly I think at the same point both defences have conceded the same.

In game eight we conceded 3 more so let's hope that doesn't happen....although we did still win :)

Interesting stat. Says a lot really.

I think all 4 are excellent, decent players.

All 4 probably wanted first team footie too, so management had to make a call which 2 to keep, which 2 to allow to leave.

No real issues with KMs choice, albeit I don't think Wolf and Burg would be materially worse. Is what it is.

Hard to justify in the context of one pair costing nothing, and getting paid far less, and the other, £25 million plus.

It’s conjecture which is better, Burgess and OShea would be my preferred pair.

Not a lot in any of the combination though…, so in context of their cost, it’s really poor decision making, that isn’t conjecture.

It’s about ego, and not accepting recruitment failures, so trying to make that work and move cheaper players on.

All out legacy players are doing really well, especially Broady and Burgess.

If we’d brought them in for big money too, they’d still be here.

It’s an interesting strategy, let’s be honest, it’s not how elite operators, operate.

They have the self awareness and confidence to correct mistakes quickly.., we keep digging.

Kipre like Burgess didn’t cost much, can come in, do fantastic, and still not get a game.., that’s not very motivating for the group wouldn’t think…, when merit isn’t the main factor, confidence go’s - always.

I am not a defensive partnership. I am a human bean.

Burgess was class, an intelligent player and had real heart- always showed in the big moments. His huge improvement since arriving was tangible. Greaves falls over at every attempt and spends a lot of time appealing for free kicks he never gets- as on Tuesday night.

I can remember when Burgess was getting slagged off on here some saying Toto Nsiala was much better , think it was after we were leading 2-0 at Cambridge and drew 2-2 . Cam was out jumped in midfield by Camb. striker for their first goal just before half time .
