Kinda shows the level of the game out there really. Some very good players there obviously, but probably a higher proportion of players like CW who have busted careers and looking for that final big pay day, playing in front of sparse crowds? |  |

He is one of hundreds of examples of players who need to "learn their trade " before heading off for the big time, with an agent pulling them along to get the next 5% of a sign on fee.
He stayed longer than some, but that was 15 years ago: players barely stay a season at a supposedly smaller club before jumping now. It's a short career, but will feel even shorter for the likes of CW. Unlucky with injuries, but that's not the whole story: the longer you stick at a club, the longer they'll stick with you after a long lay-off (see Wes Burns). |  |

Who can forget his solo goal against Sheff utd from the half way line probably one of the best goals ever scored at PR. He should of gone on to be a regular starter in the PL and maybe could have picked up the odd senior England cap but injuries, bad moves, a bit of a playboy lifestyle, and Martin O’Neill at Sunderland who didn’t rate him, damaged his career. He was as good if not better than Jordan Rhodes, but when comparing the two, I think Jordan had the better career. Sad really. |  | | |

People attach their own self esteem and identity to an outcome. Once they decide it’s ‘brilliant’ that’s the end of it, no evidence can compete with someone’s idea of themself, and being seen to be right.
We have the same thing today with various employees of the club. Who are (not) world class. They might not even be any good.
He was a good young prospect, clearly talented, nowhere near the level we built up. Time has a habit of revealing the reality.
It’s odd because we have had players like Daryl Murphy, who achieved a million times more for us, and had to work harder with less natural talent, had much better careers, but don’t get the credit they deserved. People didn’t invest their ego in him I guess .., less self reflected glory in the Daryl’s who ran through walls for us.

The guy was obviously very good , - he was capped 17 times by England U21, so it wasn't only Town fans who rated him. He got more U21 cap than Harry Kane, who is 4 months younger.
If he'd chosen to play for N.Ireland, (his dad is N.Irish) he would probably have got loads of full caps. |  | | |

Murphy in 14/15 was ridiculous. So good. Confidence flowing through him
I remember a goal against Wolves at home, think it was that season,.where he just hit it without any hesitation from the edge of the box and it flew in. It summed him up at that time.

Yes, - if you look at that U21 squad it's a very mixed bag (Sordell was playing for Colchester just a couple of years later), and Wickham fared better than most.

Connor was unlucky. He's outgrown Town by the time he moved & a PL lesser light seemed like the right option. Unfortunately, he got a knee injury early on & when he came back, Sunderland had a new manager in Martin O'Neill who didn't fancy him. Crystal Palace still thought he was worth £7m+ & then he got another bad knee injury & then it was just fits & starts. [Post edited 3 Oct 11:04]
