In the fifties we were battling with Colchester and Torquay for promotion. We played Colchester at Layer Road towards the end of the season and, at a crucial time, Benny Fenton missed a penalty. The excuse was that Colchester could not afford to go up to the second division so the player/manager had to miss it. Quite a few years later having moved to North Essex, an Ipswich hating Col U supporter tried to make the point that it was the last match of the season and Ipswich were lucky to go up. Unfortunately for him I could prove there was still 13 games left. That apparently was the only time he was wrong in his life!
