"A Conservative MP tipped as a future party leader has been condemned for saying large numbers of legally settled families must be deported, in order to ensure the UK is mostly “culturally coherent”.
Katie Lam told the Sunday Times she believed large numbers of people with legal status in the UK would need to have their right to stay revoked and should “go home”.
She said: “There are also a large number of people in this country who came here legally, but in effect shouldn’t have been able to do so. It’s not the fault of the individuals who came here, they just shouldn’t have been able to do so.
“They will also need to go home. What that will leave is a mostly but not entirely culturally coherent group of people.”"
The tragedy is that anti-immigrant has become so normalised that this story hasn't really got any traction.
What the hell has happened to the Tory Party? And why the hell hasn't Labour robustly challenged such rhetoric, which is right out of the National Front playbook?
Of course, the answer to the latter question is that Labour is deliberately keeping its head down, and indeed coming up with its own version of immigration bashing.
This was always going to be the trajectory, once you've got everyone on the page of immigration being the boogeyman, you start testing the waters on deportations.

Well, if that's what it takes to make the UK 'culturally coherent'.. Whatever the feck that means
The normalisation of far right views in the UK is incredibly sad to witness

What the f@ck is going on in this country? It's like we've jumped into a time warp and it's the 1920s not the 2020s. I'm looking forward to the 1930s, NOT.

It's actually very frightening, and I fear for my children having to live in a country where these attitudes are normalised. Who is going to fight against it? Labour's response seems to be to lie about how much St George bunting they have.

I fear its gonna get a lot worse before we see any kinda improvement.
The kinda racist nonsense that woulda been confined to a EDL/BNP rally a few years back as been completely normalised

Still they come up to me With a different name but same old face I can see the connection With another time and another place They ain't blonde-haired or blue-eyed But they think that they're the master race They're nothing but blind fascists Brought up to hate and given lives to waste

More on my point about a lack of a robust response from Labour.
"Despite various journalists asking the Labour party for a comment, it did not issue one yesterday.
This morning a Labour spokesperson has criticised Lam – but in relatively mild terms, compared to the language Keir Starmer used at Labour party conference to condemn Reform UK’s proposal to deport thousands of people living legally in the UK. Starmer said Nigel Farage’s policy was racist.
The spokesperson said:
"The Tories want to retrospectively change the rules to deport people who have been in this country and contributed to our society for decades. They would separate British children from their parents and expel doctors and nurses who have been serving patients in the NHS for years.
We welcome those who come to this country, legally, and give more than they take. We believe the right to stay here must not be automatic, but that those who play their part should be able to earn that right."
In a post on social media Rob Ford, a politics professor, says it should be easy for Labour to take a very firm stance on this.
"Guys it’s not hard. This is a 97% position Ed Davey is agreeing with here. Lam’s proposal is more extreme than Enoch Powell or Nick Griffin’s BNP. Nothing like it has been tried since Idi Amin. This should be easy mode politics."

Labour's response to all this racist nonsense has been so poor. They appear to have very little moral fibre and no idea how to deal with it or counter it beyond putting up a bit more union jack bunting.
I'm also slightly bemused that no one as asked this person to explain what they mean by culturally coherent. Can only imagine her answer woulda been hilariously stupid

Patrick Harvie, the MSP and former co-leader of the Scottish Greens, has criticised Labour for not condeming Katie Lam’s call for the deportation of legally-settled migrants more strongly. He posted this on Bluesky.
"When Labour finally respond to a horrific, far right and racist policy proposal from a Tory MP, it comes with a heavy gloss of ‘I get where you’re coming from’ instead of the outright condemnation it deserves."

Now Jenrick happily stating he would ban the burqa as well..
The only reason I can think of to why there is so little condemnation from anyone inside the Conservative party or from Labour is either that these abhorrent views aren't to far from their own or they feel that fully condemning them is a vote loser.
Either way is pretty depressing

I think there is some merit in the forced deportation of some people who are alien to the British way of life and British values...
This fine nation of ours is built on a philosophy of fair play, decency and kindness; so those who don't like or refuse to abide by these values should be deported asap, no right to appeal, just ICE d out of here
I'm not sure where we might deport them to.... maybe there is a paid-for-but-unused facility in Rwanda we could utilise
On my list....
Farage N Yaxley-Lennon S ( might be hiding behind an alias ) Tice R Banks A Anderson L Lowe R
There might be others.....

It does seem to be open season when it comes to attacks on Muslims, and has been for a long time, with no one of substance in the political arena standing up for them, or even showing any real concern about Islamophobia.

In a vaguely sane political era, someone from one of the big two parties making these comments would be losing the whip and a strongly worded statement from the party leader distancing the party from those views. Has Badenoch even commented on it?

How did you get from that to if you are not white?
There are plenty of non white people who are British and play their part in British culture.
Obviously her comments were awful and she's an idiot.
It's because I've heard second generation non-white people on the radio worry about what's going on, about their safety and what the future holds for them and their children.
My daughter's best friend was born here and is a Muslim who has voluntarily chosen to wear a headscarf. She is now fearful on the streets even in a place as diverse as London.
And don't forget that it's impossible to tell at a glance on the street whether a non-white person is a British citizen.
The other thing is that if we do go down this route, where will it stop, especially if a possible future Tory leader is advocating something that even Enoch Powell and the BNP didn't advocate?
EDIT: looking at her words again, it is not even clear that they are confined to people who are not British citizens.

Presumably if one bans the burqua, one should also ban all face coverings in public, and all religous statements in public?

Sorry to hear that, that's awful.
Thank you for the explanation. Not about what she implicitly said but about how it could be interpreted. Very fair point.
Exclusive: Labour Anger Erupts Over Party's Response To Katie Lam Immigration Row
"What’s the point of us saying we’re anti-racist when we fail to call out racism," said one MP.
Senior Labour figures have reacted with dismay to the party’s response to calls by a shadow Tory minister for the deportation of immigrants living legally in the UK.
