Poll: If KM goes now, will you applaud him when he returns with his new club?

I saw this.

I can imagine the caption of the fella getting off the boat and the Border Force rep saying "Really?!?"

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Has anyone ever considered the possibly that these asylum seekers are not only desperate, but some of them could also be as mad as a box of frogs?

It’s such a performative theatre of a policy anyway. Just ditch it, hire some more people temporarily to get through the claims backlog and then we can start saving a fortune on hotels and other related costs. It’s shameful that we’ve got tens of thousands in limbo (some of them deliberately delayed by the last government so they could play to their base, which is more criminal than shameful).

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Poll: Ok gut feeling then, promotion?

I agree the lack of processing is the main issue, it’s not even talked about though (other than you obviously lol). Genuine question here so hopefully I don’t get flamed. One thing I don’t understand is how people are paying thousands (presumably) in cash for the crossings yet in most cases have no ID. It’s surely more difficult to keep hold of substantial cash when travelling across a continent, presumably staying somewhere insecure like a tent (and many cases also crossing the med) than to look after ID? If you had ID surely a flight and claiming asylum at an airport is a much safer option?

Maybe I’m missing some context, but in cases like this Iran whilst a rogue nation, and incredibly oppressive isn’t a war zone, so why no ID (which is presumably the reason for making such a dangerous journey? Genuinely looking to understand why so many people are making such a hazardous journey. I get they can’t any longer claim UK asylum in France but it still doesn’t explain why someone from Iran (just as an example) doesn’t take a much cheaper and safer flight?

I imagine for most people, especially those being oppressed by the state, it's not as simple as searching on Flight Scanner and rocking up at the airport. Also, they would need both a French visa and a British visa to fly from Paris to the UK. Those visas are not available to these people. Safe, legal routes would greatly reduce, maybe even stop the boats. Of course it wouldn't appease the flag waving patriots because poor brown people would still be arriving.

Yeah, that 7 quid a day will be a huge draw. Maybe your 'frustration' should be aimed at the other end of the wealth spectrum.

There’s a mix of payment methods by the sounds of it. Some pay cash, many use intermediaries in some sort of shadow ‘honour’ banking system. There’s some discussion around it in this article from a recent BBC investigation https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art

It doesn’t look like there’s a simple answer to how people travel. A lot of the journeys seem to be by irregular routes - walking out through land bridges like Turkey, overland buses, small boat sea crossings. There are several major routes to access Europe https://www.frontex.europa.eu/ And then when in Europe a lot travel through arranged buses or public transport (again buses).

On ID it seems a there are also a range of reasons why they may not be carrying it. Some of that will be down to not having ID (some flee too quickly to collect them, or their country may not issue it), some are advised to destroy docs to avoid gangs or authorities IDing them. Some travel on fake papers arranged by gangs that would not hold up to airport level security. These aren’t people who can just jump on planes in the main (they wouldn’t be allowed to if they wanted to come here).

Important reminder we’re in no way the main destination for asylum seekers and international law allows them to claim asylum where they want, before anyone raises the first country point favoured by racists and xenophobes.

Not much point reposting Times or Telegraph articles because they are paywalled.

And in this case, the article is a news story and not one-sided politically. Indeed, in its news reporting the Guardian these days is much less partisan than the Times or the Telegraph which are both pale shadows of the respectable papers they once were.

Our asylum policy seems to be to repeat unworkable bo**ocks and hope nobody notices that it won't work. Much like most other government policies at the moment.

On a related theme, there is a good chance that Reform will win a by-election in Caerphilly today.

According to the 2021 census, 97.7% of its population are white, and only 1.6% do not regard themselves as having a UK identity.

That being the case, the boats and immigration, the two most important Reform policies, seem rather irrelevant there. And I don't suppose the £90 billion cuts that they proposed at the last election would help either.

It is making progress. Yes, Starmer is about as genuine as a Chinese market Rolex and Labour are utterly crap at politics and communication, but that doesn't detract from the massive international effort that's taking place across Europe and beyond in tracking down criminal trafficking gangs. Drops in irregular border crossings generally are being seen as evidence that the approach is starting to work. We'll have to see if that's a trend that continues though.

There's no other way to reduce asylum migration than to (a) work internationally to increase political stability in the source countries and also improve their resilience to climate change (likely to become one of the main drivers of migration in future years), and (b) cut of the head of the trafficking gangs who are exploiting people and facilitating the trade.

We'll never stop it entirely of course, but at least efforts are now aimed at something that can make a difference unlike the performative waste of money that was the Rwanda scheme.

It's crackers. Although no coincidence that the area contains one of the poorest parts of Western Europe and has below average school attendance and adult educational attainment. Exactly the sort of place Reform likes to prey on (see also Clacton).

It's thoroughly depressing, but seems to be unstoppable. People don't care about the racism, incompetence and lies shown already by their other councils. They just want 'change' (ignoring the fact that voting for the change proposed by Farage in 2016 has made them worse off and obviously not any happier).

(Edit - it's a lovely and interesting part of the world though, but the people seem to be lacking hope - aren't we all?).

It's a good question.

A positive is technology, in this case face recognition, identified this criminal as soon as he stepped on land.
