Curiously Braintree were made big favourites and I can't work out why? Was wondering if any non league experts could help as to why.... Despite being a league apart they appear similar standard and both have played at home to Farnborough in the last few weeks where Chelmsford were lower odds vs them than Braintree were. | Chelmsford vs Braintree on 17:53 - Oct 30 with 1001 views | Miaow | I really hope Braintree (my local team) win as they've only progressed to the second round once before (lost 5–2 at Millwall in 2016/17). The first time they made it to the first round was in, I think, 2005/06, when they lost 4–1 at Shrewsbury, but the goal they did manage was scored past a young Joe Hart. I was reading recently and I think I might be right in saying that Chelmsford have never played in a nationwide league, that is they've never been in the Alliance Premier League/Conference/National League since 1979, but they did apply for election to the Football League numerous times. They seem to be perennially in the NL South. I hope Braintree win, they stay up and also that Chelmsford end up getting promoted. I wonder if there will be any news on a potential new stadium for them (Chelmsford) at some point.

Chelmsford City were one of the top non-league clubs in the 1960s & early 1970s, but never made it into the football league because of the "old pals" voting for re-election. From the mid 1970s they went into serious decline, lost their ground in 1997 & had to play miles away until 2006. They plan to upgrade their current Melbourne Stadium (my school sports day used to be held there) to 5,000 capacity.

They've just about finished cleaning up the city centre after Town's visit in 1973. If the 'old pals' had voted differently, then almost certainly Chelmsford would be a bigger club than Colchester by now, perhaps much bigger, Still, Chelmsford has landed up with ALL the cricket these days, so I don't feel too sorry for them.

I don't know about much bigger. Colchester & Chelmsford have long had similar size populations & Chelmsford's problem was that London was very accessible & the majority of kids at my school supported West Ham (the nearest of the London clubs). [Post edited 1 Nov 10:00]

New Chelmsford owner has big ambitions, turned to club full time this year and built a very strong NLS squad, but has been a really mixed bag - sometimes they look really strong, sometimes they look really poor. Is a real 50/50 for me, Lyle Taylor at Chelmsford is scoring a lot of goals, particularly in the FA Cup.
