It begs the question though, why are none of the young players being given a chance in the first team? When will they ever get a chance with the squad we have? At best, their prospects are similar to that of Cam Humphreys ie a few seasons out on loan in league two or league one and then the odd cup game before probably being sold. Instead of taking a punt on signings from other clubs, maybe we should bring some of the academy players through. Its’s something I expected to happen under a coach like McKenna but sadly not it appears.

Fin Barbrook looked real quality last night for the U21s but can't even make the matchday squad for Lincoln. Hopefully some of them will go away and do well at League One level soon and start to make steps to the first team that way.

Elliott & Boniface as full back look good, Carr has something about him, Mendel could be a player and I like the look of that young Harry Clarke [Post edited 1 Nov 2025 8:21]

Carr is probably another good example. Spent last season on loan in the National League with Gateshead for the first half of the season where he made 1 appearance and then Ebbsfleet where he made 10. 21 year olds who go to the top have usually played at Championship level by that time. Hopefully he kicks on now but it would be unusual. Think they would probably have been trying to get Boniface out on loan this season but he had an injury in preseason. Be interesting to see if/where he goes in Jan and to what level.

We haven't produced/been able to attract or keep enough of the right quality and this is our first season at the top table so it will take a bit of time. What I would say is we seem to have targeted and successfully brought in some real prospects with the ambition and potential to get more into the first team. We are probably 18 months away from being able to judge if it gets more youths into the first team. There are 3-4 with genuine chances in the next 12 months. McKenna is certainly not afraid to field youngsters: Omari had very little first team experience and Egeli now has only just turned 19. McKenna brings them into first team training and knows if they are good enough.
