MBCT - Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy 16:27 - Nov 4 with 777 viewsBlacknGoldnBlue

I've been recommended to do a MBCT course to help with my depression and low self esteem. My understanding is that its an 8 week course and an expectation of an hour daily at home. Does anyone have experience with MBCT they'd be willing to share?

I've done a Mindfulness course and Cognitive therapy separately (for OCD). but not merged together

It sounds like an interesting approach and I could see how one could compliment the other. The mindfulness exercises were great for calming down and learning to bypass / ignore stress and negative thoughts, by focusing on the here and now. My understanding of CBT is that you're not really meant to bypass or dodge negative thoughts, but instead dwell on it, so that such thoughts lose their power. If I have that wrong, someone please correct me.

As it happens I practice my own finely honed method of dealing with Norwich's failure, helped by me being a bit of footballing hussy.... I ignore it and concentrate on happiness elsewhere, like the Arse doing well or even my own aged team (we won our first league game in 2.5 years of trying the other day! woo! yeah!)

I’d struggle to get around the pitch these days. I can do slow and steady, but the stop-start and turns of footie would be beyond. Hats off to you for keeping on going (I assume by “aged” it means you’re not 18!).

Actually, i saw that norwich's over 50s walking football team won some big compnthe other day, so neah!.

We're just in the essex senior league over 45s bottom div (not walking - more slow motion running) so cant get relegated any further down!

CBT is more about identifying the root causes of depressive spirals.

Working back from eg "I hate myself" What was the thought before that? And before that? And that? Etc.

And then learning to reframe the response to the original trigger.

And then adding in a ton of "small changes that make a difference" in terms of routines or locations etc.

Adding Mindfulness into this mix would give an additional positive reinforcement mechanism, and focused de-stress time.

It's absolutely worth committing as much as possible to such a course.
