we're not really underachieving on our xG though (probably because most of jaden's goals are very low xG?) we do need to convert more of the simpler ones for sure!

Think the underlying stats show that we're increasingly doing a lot of the right things but 'moments' in games are hurting us - either good chances to go ahead during a particular game state or gifting opportunities to the opposition in a game state that works for them. Is it tactical, specific player issues, squad settling down or just some of the marginal differences that lead to goals? Maybe a bit of all of that. The underlying data tends to (but not always) be reflected pretty much (but not exactly!) where teams end up but sometimes momentum and some of the untangibles out there keep some teams higher placed than they should be and the reverse.

| expected points table on 14:25 - Nov 5 with 574 views | MrPotatoHead | Doesn't surprise me. Over the past 10 games we've picked up 18 points, had we done that ppg in August and played the same number of games as other teams we would be 4th and only 2 points off being 2nd in the real table. I don't think we've been a million miles off it since those opening 3 games. The last 3 performances in particular have been good, we've looked better defensively and created a decent amount of chances. Last night was just a case of not taking them. We're getting there. We'll win Saturday. [Post edited 5 Nov 14:27]

Looking at the other end of that particular table, if we get a bit of mean reversion we should end up with 9 points from the next three games (Swansea, wrexham and hull) who are on double figures for outperformance v xPts, and all lie in the bottom 4. Also interesting to note that our feathered friends have been as hard done by as we have!

Yeah, in isolation last night's result was frustrating. However, if we back it up with another away win on Saturday, it's a very good set of results over the last 6-8 weeks. I'm happy to steadily edge our way towards 2nd place between now and January. We're often so much better being the hunter rather than the hunted. Let's hope we are within striking distance by Christmas and find a League 1-esque 2nd half of the season where it all clicks and we blitz teams every week.

I do think that over that ridiculously busy Christmas period several of the teams above us will begin to find things more difficult with squad depth, injuries, etc and we are quite well placed to manage that. Some of McKenna's 'tinkering' might then show its value as our own replacements slot in more seamlessly.

Absolutely how I see it as well. I'd go as far as saying last night was our best performance of the year. Had any of those simple chances gone in I think the mood on here would be very different. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Agreed, we're heading in the right direction and need not overreact to a home draw. No doubt it was a shame and feels like 2 points left on the table, but we don't need and can't expect to win every game. Since the end of August we've shown top 6 form, and it feels like there's still a fair amount more to come from us to push that to top 2 form. As you say, if we're within 3 points of the top 2 at the turn of the year that's a nice position to be in.
