25/26 Leadership Group: Who is it and how strong is it? 20:03 - Nov 11 with 1446 viewsMatt_Netherlands

There was lots made of the squad leadership group over the last few years, who do we reckon is in it this year, and how does it compare to previous?

My best guesses:

Dara - Lots been said about his leadership over the last few weeks so won’t go back into it. Although will say he doesn’t have the same fire as a Morsy or a Magtilton.

Young - Can’t doubt his experience and often see him with his arm round someone’s shoulder, a quiet influencer perhaps but unlikely to be here for the long haul unless he becomes a coach.

Davis - The closest we have to one of our own in the starting eleven. Can tell everyone in the squad loves and respects him, would love to see him as a captain if he was more vocal on the pitch.

Szmodics - A big character and brings energy to the squad, but not sure I’d have him down as a leader

Furlong - Former WBA captain, and would probably have expected to see a little more on pitch leadership from him than we have to date.

Wonder if one of the keepers could be in there too, and maybe Jens given he was integral last season.

Overall…. It’s a much “quieter” leadership group than even last season where we’d have had Morsy, Luongo, Chaplin etc.

(Apols if covered recently!)

Possibly Hirst. He always seems quite vocal in the Town in 5 videos in the tunnel and pre game huddle. He's also been here longer than the majority, so understands the culture required.

Poll: What will be announced first?

Yeah Hirst is a tricky one to place… well liked and been here a while, but also can’t really imagine him being a leader in the squad? More likely to put Taylor there than Hirst!

Pretty sure Greaves is in it.

Feels to me a bit like having prefects at school. I always admired the older kids at school who clearly had no desire to be a prefect and get a special tie.

I'm pretty sure Jack Taylor is one of them.

One has got to be Harry Clarke, very vocal

O'Shea,Greaves,Leif are the main leaders, Taylor probably as well being an elder statesman in the team now. Palmer quite possibly too.

I'd be surprised if Jens Cajuste was in the leadership group.. Doesn't strike me as a leader, and he's here on loan..
I'd stick Matusiwa ahead of Jens, in terms of influence. And leading by example..

I think the group has a couple of different functions and isn't just about on game leadership. When McKenna and players have spoken about it the things that have been mentioned have been:

Driving standards in training.
Representing the players viewpoint with the coaching team - e.g. voicing opinions/ideas about training
Overall behaviours around the club/community

Some of that comes from being vocal but some of it just comes from doing the right things at the right times.

I remember Peter Crouch saying that players didn't like being captain because you were in charge of collecting fines for misdemeanours like being late for the team bus and it was a pain in the arse. Maybe that's a job that's been delegated. Apart from Young, the 'senior pro' is Button, who presumably was recruited largely on the basis of being a 'good pro' and 'good bloke' as well as a good keeper. I can't really see the need for 'group' at all, but I'd think Button would be in it. He'd be the best person to tell the management that there was a general unhappiness about a late change to the training schedule that was considered unreasonable by the players.

I think the reason for it is to make the players feel 'empowered' to push the group forward and allow an element of self-management without everything coming back to manager/coaches. There's been a few times where McKenna has been asked about half-time team talks where he's basically said the players did it all because they were saying the things he needed to.

Wasn't it implied that Wes was one of the new leadership group?

Being vocal and being a leader are very different.

I can't see Clarke having that authority in this squad

We don’t know.

We certainly know as a fact that O'Shea, Greaves and Leif are in the leadership group. O'Shea obviously and the other two have said so in interviews.
