Treachery and corruption and he only gets this. Says a lot about the man who is pretending not to know him either.

How can anyone support these scumbags?

Perhaps you could restate your first sentence 'We have secret services and in this case they demonstrated that a successful case could be brought.' It is naive to think that this will always be the case, or that this type of interference is all that is being perpetrated by hostile foreign states.

and your evidence of the secret services covering up russian interference or reform collaboration is ....

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

That is not what I said, and I am surprised and disappointed in you for misrepresenting me. Please do not make that mistake again.

What should have been obvious to you, and to anyone reading my comment, was that I do not expect perfection from our security arrangements. That would be unreasonable. It is our responsibility to politically engage and continually develop awareness, as much as we can, of what is going on in an increasingly dangerous, in human existence terms, World. It is the most patriotic thing we can do.

quite, but always on the basis of established evidence. developing awareness on the basis of rumour and supposition is just spreading rumours and supposition.

That is a very poor attempt at an apology.

At least he was prosecuted. Anthony Blunt wasn't, all swept under the carpet. The nuclear secrets spy Klaus Fuchs got 14 years as a comparison.

Anthony Blunt received immunity from prosecution in return for his full cooperation with the security services.

The fact that he was public school educated and knew a lot of influential people had nothing to do with this at all.

At least he was stripped of his knighthood within his lifetime.

On a serious note, I do wonder if there is a mechanism to suspend Reform from parliament until an investigation is done. It's now proven and shown the party is compromised by a hostile nation.

Regardless of who it is, the security services should be involved to ensure the Russians are cleaned out of our government.

That strays into very dangerous territory. No one suggested that the Labour party should be suspended from Parliament when John Stonehouse, Bernard Floud, and Will Owen were found top be spying for the Czechs during the cold war.

We don't suspend political parties we disagree with just because some opf their representatives have been compromised. That would be Stalin-esque.

by that time all his fellow spies/ contacts had fled or been imprisoned more than 10 years earlier. There was little further information to be gained. Personally I don't think there was appetite at high level for another damaging/ embarrassing spy trial.

How senior were they though? I get that point but people seem very blasé about this. Especially when Nige has been so dishonest about his Russian ties again.

That truly worrying - I’d suggest Tice and Farage pretending they barely knew or met Gill and the Russians involved does warrant intense scrutiny. How that’s done though is difficult

Stonehouse inspired Reggie Perrin. Left a pile of clothes on the beach and faked his own death. There were at least ten Labour MP's accused of spying for the Soviets during the cold war. Labour MP Bernard Floud killed himself after he was interviewed by MI5 before being offered a ministerial post. Bob Maxwell was most likely a triple agent, spying for MI6, the KGB and the Mossad. I can only think of one Tory, Raymond Mawby, who was spying for the soviets during the cold war. Probably more Labour because back then there would have been a kinship with a communist regime.

Our elected representatives have been spying for enemy countries for centuries. Loads more have taken backhanders to speak on behalf of other nations. Just have to root them out and deal with them.

I'll have you know I was best friends with this man in my first year at university.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art

He was Monday Club right wing in those days but I never sensed he was racist and I got on well with him.

He failed his first year and didn't come back so I lost contact, but a friend of mine saw him about 10 years later by which time he was living in France, and I suppose it is ironic for a Brexiteer when interviewed the other day still to be living in his chateau in France.

I might had that he wasn't fat in those days.
