Spend a year rebuilding my armed forces, paid for by Ukraine, fire a missile at Moscow that fell in a field just outside and take the rest of the country and move straight on to the next meal. Anyone thinking it’s a good deal for Ukraine needs a re-think. ‘Oh what about saving lives’ some will say. This deal will cost lives and freedom in more of Europe than Ukraine in the not too distant. Appalling. The guarantee is simply that when Russia invaded, this deal goes. Nothing to actually deter. And forced elections in a sovereign state which is democratic. The trouble is we can neither defend ourselves or meet NATO commitments let alone support or influence what happens to Ukraine.

No government has been interested in defence beyond tapping its budget for other purposes since the Berlin Wall fell. They’re not now. Some vague promise it might be 3% if economic conditions allow (fat chance) by 3034 is really not taking it seriously.
And Russia knows it hence interference with borders, tech, spying, bribing politicians, you name it. Ukraine merited and needed European support. Europe needed to do it too because it’s vulnerable to a lot worse than interference from rogue states Russia, US and China. But after nearly four years of war and a year of Trump, most of Europe still doesn’t get it.
So while Starmer will shake Zelenski’s hand, look a little grave in his paid for suit and send him an Arsenal Christmas Card, he and the government don’t have Ukraine’s back.
