Yep. They’ve started very well. If England let this Test match slip, it’s curtains for the series. After being 65-1 in second innings and Cummings and Hazelwood to come back. It’s been 14 years since we last won a test back in Australia…

Of all the brainless cricket we’ve watched from England over the years, this has got to be the worst. What an opportunity lost if they don’t win this. 71-0….

75/1 now. I’m clinging to the slim hope that they’ll ‘do an England’ again, who were 65/1 and then collapsed….

If the batsman can't sustain our innings for a reasonable period of time, then the bowlers will be knackered and have no time to recover. That coupled with the flattening track appears to have done for us. Oh, and Head coming out like a man possessed. Very real chance of losing this inside TWO DAYS... | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Michael Vaughan has made the point on TMS that they didn't even get 33 overs rest mentally as they were padding up within 15 overs of our innings. Absolute shambles and the same sh1t will get rolled out by McCullum and Stokes afterwards. It's hard to see anything but 0-5 if we continually fail to adapt or learn, not only on the field but in terms of planning.

Have we ever lost so quickly from being in the position of, effectively, 90-1 at lunch in the 3rd innings? To lose from that position inside 2 sessions is utter lunacy.

I've watched England for over forty years and seen some truly dismal performances. But this is a new level of arrogant incompetence that slaps the face of so many dedicated, loyal followers who spend thousands following this. I feel for the bowlers too. The way we bat just doesn't give them time to recover.

You've summed it up perfectly. This was an opening Ashes test there for the taking with four days to win the game and they've thrown it away with a complete lack of strategy and a ridiculous level of hubris. Two of my mates have third day tickets, I imagine they will be less than impressed.

Yes, I agree with all of the above replies. And the thing that is hardest to take is Stokes being so stubborn and arrogant under very polite questioning from Aggers afterwards. Refusing to play the pink ball game that has been arranged for them is stubborn, arrogant and wrong. And the constant references to "that's how things used to be done a long time ago" is just so conceited. This England team has no problem in doing things that haven't been done since the 1920s in some senses - like losing within 2 days. I appreciate that it's Stokes grit, spirit and bloody-mindedness that make him such a one-off and capable of such brilliance. But I just think this regime has lost the plot and seems to think they've reinvented the wheel, only to discover that it's kinda square.
