"Bored housewife? Done all your chores? Alcoholism a little too stigmatised? Why not come and play some bingo! You might even make new friends with our chat function, which we've definitely not included to try and keep you coming back..." Surely there must be a special place in hell, though, for the likes of the current advert for a certain online casino, and the famous faces that take part in them? I can't imagine that the likes of Danny Dyer, Gemma Collins etc., are so dense as to be completely oblivious to the ultimate goal of their paymasters; doubly so when they'll have been approached to appear in these adverts purely for the companies to get access to their target audiences. The KoA gang were talking about Danny Dyer on this week's pod, and suggesting he'd somewhat come of age and was turning into a bit of a national treasure. The last I checked, the likes of Stephen Fry, Dame Judi Dench, and David Attenborough weren't selling out their fans to predatory gambling firms. [Post edited 23 Nov 15:59]

They are filled with women playing 1-2p tickets and talking in the chat room at the side of a game. It's mainly a social thing for many of them. Not sure there are too many on there spending the weekly housekeeping on slots.

It’s just as damaging but will also be ignored as the ‘fun’ is seen to be worth the risks to health, relationships, what little money people have, etc.

When the fun stops, it’s already far too late.

But gambling isn’t illegal and I’m guessing that the vast majority of regular gamblers aren’t addicted and simply like the occasional fiver or tenner on the football or anything. Unfortunately some do get addicted and spend cash which they cannot afford and obviously gambling firms should try to combat this. But what responsibility does the individual bear? It’s easy to blame the gambling firms but surly the individual should take some responsibility to not get to that point when addiction becomes a realistic possibility?

I think that at least part of the problem comes from the fact that so many of these games, in particular digital slots, are designed precisely to target those individuals who may be receptive to problem gambling and, in particular, the parts of their brains that lead to such a heightened risk. Lure them in with some free spins, or a 'free daily play' and you're already a good chunk of the way towards turning them into a profitable punter. Hell, even the warning text seems to be engineered in that sort of way. Why else would 'FUN' be the most prominent word in that particular sentence?
