I expect to hear the PA in the SBR Upper.
If there was an emergency we would be the last to know about it....and probably too late.

I saw a similar permanent sign at the entrance to the 'Fan Block' at Schalke the other month:

Flyers met (expectedly) with derision from folk around me reading them, and then them standing in silence the whole game. There’s nothing extreme there, basically just “be vocal from the designated vocal section that you’ve decided to buy a ticket in”. These types of flyers are also pretty common at other clubs around Europe.

Say what you want about our group, but we’re the only people actively trying to improve the atmosphere at Portman Road. The club don’t care (they’ve ignored our messages for months and excluded us from the ‘fan advisory board’) and nobody else is seemingly arsed. It’s an English problem just as much as an Ipswich Town one, but it’s pretty demoralising to see our home support so lethargic, particularly after the near 20 years of shïte that we all suffered before the takeover.

Regardless, we’ll keep slogging away for another seven years in the hope that one day something clicks with our club and supporters, even if it hasn’t during the last seven that we’ve been active.

You're spot on with the flyer, and the derision on Twitter is pathetic.

If you want to be in Block A purely to enjoy the atmosphere, you shouldn't be in Block A. Why should anyone disagree with being asked to vocally support the team if they're in the 'vocal support' section?

German ultras (from what I've seen of them at Hertha BSC) are amazing. They know that they're there to get behind the team, and everything else (even just being able to see the game) is secondary. It's probably helped by dirt cheap tickets in the 'Curven' - English pricing probably creates an element of 'I've paid enough to be here, so you don't get to tell me how to support the team'.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Hope you didn’t take the OP as derision.

It’s specifically why I added the “Just a bit of fun”. The ground has something for everyone, which was my point, and yours.

Not at all mate - I just wanted to say something about it on here when I saw it posted.

Scrolled past it on twitter last night but I try to avoid reading or commenting on anything BA related on there nowadays as the responses are always so predictably tiresome, it’s never a productive use of my time.

Yet again seeing this lot think they’re somebodies. Trying to leverage themselves into things like the fan advisory board? Behave. Still beating the drum that your better fans than everyone else? Go stand on your little ‘capo’ platform you want and take a long jump. The reason the fan base is divided most of the time is this bunch. You present yourself as the only real fans of the club just because you think you can make some noise and be ‘lads’. (And presumably lasses).

If you actually presented yourself in a manner appealing to the whole fan base, then you might be met with a bit more acceptance. While you beat the them and us narrative which usually spouts out, then you have no hope and little support.

I can safely say I support the team at every game without the need for an instruction manual. I’m there to watch football and do it my way. Not needing to look down on everyone else around me if they choose to do or say something different to myself.

When this so called fan group realises they need the actual fans on board and behind them then they may get somewhere and not need fan rules 🙄

It looks like they’re just asking people to make a bit of noise.zThat shouldn’t be offensive to anyone.

I’m assuming you’ve never spoken to any of our members in real life, as the ‘thinking we’re better than everyone else’ couldn’t be more wide of the mark. There’s no ego amongst us, just a small group of Ipswich fans ageing from 15 to 50 who enjoy what we do and want to create an atmosphere at PR.

I’m not saying we’re perfect, and we’ve made mistakes over the years and sometimes gone about some things the wrong way, but it’s always been with good intentions. How do you think we should be ‘presenting’ ourselves?

We’re also not bothered about the fan advisory board (its never even been discussed in the group), I was just making a point that if there’s ‘fan engagement’ at the club, you’d expect the most active fan group to be part of it, no?

You can watch football however you want - all we’re saying here with the flyer is that if you’ve bought a ticket in a designated vocal section, (which accounts for about 2% of seats inside the ground) it’s not unreasonable to be expected to contribute vocally, is it?

We have a contact at HSV - he was part of one of their original ultra groups back in the day. He was telling me once how when the German groups were forming in the early 90’s, there was the same kind of kickback to the organised style of support that we see here now, but gradually the landscape changed and people became more accepting and responsive to it.

We think it’ll take at least a generation before it changes here (if ever), but we’re willing to keep working at it until then with the hope that there’ll be groups at Ipswich that come after us in the future that will be able take it further.

If not then so be it, but we’ll at least have given it a good go and have a few stories to tell when we’re older.

I know exactly why they've put these out. I've previously bought a ticket in this area, right of the stairs as you look at the stand and was dismayed when everyone just sat down when the game started and joined in with some light clapping only.

The tone of the flyer is wrong though. Feels like a telling off. Maybe that's the intention but was clearly just going to put people's backs up as evidenced here.

Could have gone with something more like a gentle reminder:

WELCOME TO SECTION A!
We fought to get this area designated as a singing area. Here's what it's all about etc

Don't get disheartened though. It's a good project and much needed now the North Stand is just 50 year old men with their arms crossed.

If I was to give you some tips I'd say:

1) Use the drum more minimally, other parts of the ground you can only hear the drum, not voices

2) Be more realistic: complicated songs based on obscure European techno songs nicked from dutch ultras groups on YouTube are less likely to catch on in sleepy Suffolk, than something familiar and simpler.

3) I know you want a song that can go round and round for a long time but it wouldn't harm to pepper in the occasional short more classic ones in between. You've got a better chance of waking up the North Stand that way.

Poll: Is it time to rotate keepers and give Walton his spot back?
