Walton for Palmer,

And I am sorry,Cajuste has done nothing to suggest he should be starting ahead of Taylor.

I think much of Cajuste's problem is the physicality of the Championship. No player should just be able to turn away from opponents the way that he does, but he is getting caught out too often.

Everyone has a different idea of the best Eleven, for me Kipre over greaves every time and Azon up front, Cajuste not really deserving of it either.

The biggest problem is that KM doesn't even know which is ridiculous.

Think the idea of having a set best XI is a bit dated to be honest, it's much more of a squad game these days. Most sides will have a core of players who will start the vast majority of games and then others who will rotate in and out a bit. Even in 2023/24 I'm not sure you'd have 100% agreement from people on our best XI. I think 9 of the positions would be pretty easy but whether you have Burns or Hutch on the right isn't an easy decision, nor is whether you have Clarke (who had a solid first half of the season) or Tuanzebe (who grew into the role) at right back.

I agree with you that the idea of the best XI starting week-in-week-out is a tad dated. I’m more concerned that the squad as a whole isn’t good enough for promotion.

I think the squad is good enough for promotion.

But I fear for us if a return to the Premier League with this squad and a few unproven additions is the result.

In terms of individual ability the squad is more than good enough for promotion. As a team we've not really clicked yet, not consistently anyway. There have been periods in games where we've looked good but other periods where we've been disjointed. The biggest frustration is that despite indifferent performances overall, we should have more points on the board than we do but we've not been clinical enough.

Agree on Kipre.

Agree on Cajuste (although that means replacing him with Taylor, and Taylor's decent recent form is perhaps not longlasting enough yet for this to be a firm conclusion).

I suppose you have to pick /someone/ up front, and Hirst must get the nod because his scoring record is much better than Azon, and I have nothing against his general play. But really, other than our left wingers, none of our attackers are scoring enough.

Possibly Walton over Palmer and definitely Kipre over Greaves for me. In fact my 80 year old Nan over Greaves, shes far tougher.

Personally I wouldn't pick Hirst if he was the only striker here lol.

If all fit, and at their best, then Burns probably makes it, to be honest!

You seem to reach a similar conclusion that our right wing has been a disappointment, and I agree that it would be really interesting to see Clarke and Philogene start together. One counter-argument is often that we'd have insufficient impact subs on the left when both of those players tire. But if we're not using our subs until pretty late, that argument ceases to have much impact. I guess maybe Kieran is playing the long game, rotating the squad, and hoping that our squad is then much fitter come Spring. If that's the strategy, and if it even half works, we should make the play-offs you'd think.

With your XI: Egeli can come on as a sub on the right, and if we'd kept Broadhead instead of signing McAteer, he could have done the same on the left, but ho hum.

It would be interesting to know why Kieran doesn't want to try Egeli in the 10, given that our 10s have been a disappointment, and Egeli has not set the world alight trying to shoot from that side (9.5% of his shots are on target!). But in default of that, Nunez can have a pop there as the unlocker in chief.

Cajuste has been crap, Taylor's a better fit than him.

I quite like the idea of Clarke on the right as a way of getting both him and Philogene on the pitch together but I don't think we're likely to see it.

Other than that I would probably agree, although there isn't much between Walton and Palmer, nor is there between Greaves or Kipre. I like Akpom myself but I'm not really sure what his best position is yet.

I haven't seen anything from Azon that would make me want to start him.
Would love to see something like this tried (but it's probably v stupid)

Palmer
Furlong - O'Shea - Kipre - Davis
Philogene - Matisuwa - Taylor - Nunez
Szmodics
Hirst

I'm still a Szmodics fan - really think he could tear it up at this level
Need a better striker and I can see the Akpom argument. Neither he or Hirst give me much confidence

Philogene has to start every game. Simply better than Clarke
