When optimists start to turn… 22:44 - Dec 2 with 2528 viewsChris_ITFC

That’s when the bubble is near to bursting. No, not the stock market, but Ipswich Town.

I consider myself one of the most optimistic. I shoot down the moaners. But boy, for all the madness of the equaliser, I’m heading home worried.

Blackburn didn’t sit deep, it was quite the opposite of our usual excuse. Yet we were so bad, so devoid of ideas, so predictable, and Kieran’s wonderful system that has brought us so much success now looks SO RIGID. Players stick to such set positions, with zero movement, and passes that are so telegraphed. If we know what’s about to happen, so do the opposition analysts, managers, players.

Quite bizarrely, the best thing about our system used to be Leif. He was the whole flipping purpose of the system! Yet that’s the only thing we’ve changed - such an athlete and crosser is forced into a narrow central role - and when he does get wide, Clarke and Philogene want to occupy the same 5x5 yards of grass. We’ve literally fecked ourselves.

I actually don’t blame the players, or all the changes. The system and patterns of play look so rigid and so choreographed now, I don’t think it matters which 11 are out there.

My worry is that poor performances probably result in things being even more drilled and choreographed on the training ground. Trouble is, we’ve got a set of attackers who thrive off freedom.

Even this morning, I was shooting down moans. But after a week of travelling and watching, we feel fundamentally flawed by the thing that made us so good, and I don’t see it getting much better quickly.

The remaining optimism is telling me we could still be 6 months from the Premier League - and that thoughts scares the life out of me!

It’s tactical.

Like I say in my OP, we’ve fecked ourselves, completely disarming Leif, by prioritising Clarke and Philogene. I assume we bought them to be moulded into 10s, and have given up on that experiment.

Thing is despite his success KM has form for playing players in positions that they don't suit.

Look at hutch. Km was desperate for him to make it as a 10. He wasn't. We only got the best of him once he went wide because of injury to wes

Sammy s. Even more so for prem football we brought him in then km played him left side. That wasn't Sammy

Akpom. He does not will no suit our 10 yet km is desperate for it to work like he needs to be able to say see told ya.

Egeli.. wide right. Why? What's he developing out there? How to be ignored most of the game or how to receive the ball when you do it on halfway. (, BTW well aware he scored)

Davis inverted. No no no

Simplify the game. Thats why we were celebrating promotion 2 years ago. Simple football played with passion desire and a want to pass the ball to team mates but team mates who could do simple jobs.

Your last paragraph hammer, nail, head. This is my concern if we go up we're going to make Southampton and Derby look like prime Pep.

We've regressed so badly in the last year and a half and there are no signs it will get better, if anything it's getting worse.

We have to look at context and for a squad that is the most expensive ever assembled in this league with little stand out competition other than Coventry to get one point at Oxford/Blackburn (no disrespect to them) which in all honesty should have been zero and be knocked out the cup by Bromley and not even be in a play off position shows we are closer to L1 than PL.

That said will be typical Ipswich we beat Cov but then likely can't beat Sheff Weds.

The signs were there from the first game of the season at Brum. when we put in a completely passive performance & were lucky to nick a point.
Then, we went out of the League cup to 4th tier Bromley.
Then, largely stuttering performances until we seemed to have turned the corner with 2 thumping away wins. Since then, we've taken 5 points from 4 games against teams that sit between 9th & 20th in this league.
Only a supreme optimist would say there are signs of sustained improvement.
Lots of excuses, but we've not really been hit by injuries. The "new players" should be bedded in by now.

Oh, I’m not too fussed about that. I just want to enjoy watching us.

And to be honest, I’m struggling to comprehend how much money we’ve spent on the squad that finished 2nd in this league, only to now be at risk of falling out of contention.

That’s the bit I struggle with.

We have spent so much money and player for player we have a better squad. But not a better team. Something isn’t clicking. We should be destroying most teams. We shouldn’t fear anyone.

McK probably thinks he's some ultimate genius coach that can train and convert players to play in new positions just as good as before. Plus getting these "converted" players to play in fixed systems they aren't really used to. Maybe that's McK ultimate challenge but no $hit Sherlock, it has not paid off so far and we look a shadow of ourselves.

We should not be the human guinea pig for McK's constant tinkering and experimentation. Its clear that players are not performing to their true potential because of this.

Blackburn didn’t sit deep compared to some, but I thought they were more negative than in the first game. I’m not sure though as I missed a good chunk of the first half and watched this one on TV, compared the compressed perspective from behind the goal in the first match.

The first match they moved the ball really well in those difficult conditions and played through us fairly easily. Last night looked more direct and much more about trying to hit us on the break. Although as I said, I may have that wrong.

I think it’s criminal how we’ve clipped Leif’s wings, but it is what it is and we’ve somehow got to find a way to fit in two show ponies into that left hand side role. It’s a shame they’re not better on the right, as that would be much better for the balance of the team. Although if your first thought is always to dwell on the ball and take on as many players as possible, it’s pointless talking about ‘the team’. If I was KM I’d be making Philogene and Clarke watch all of Hutch’s games on repeat. There’s a way to use individual brilliance to add to the team. Running down dead ends and slowing us down most of the time isn’t it. But then just when you’ve given up on them, one of them has a blinder, which is what makes the situation so frustrating.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

They pressed us high, man-to-man, which really effected our build-up, to the extent that Akpom went down on 30 so Kieran could tell Walton to go long.

They also played a high line, but we have zero threat or pace in behind sadly.

Second half was different.

But yes, an Egeli type cutting in or playing narrow on the left would be great. Heard there’s a decent one at Wrexham, actually.

It is a worry.

Destroying teams is maybe a bit strong, although the Championship All-Stars stuff has died a death.

But it all just feels so clunky.

Playing people out of position as a #10? Wonder where he got that idea…

Can you ask Kieron, if the experiments of Sammy S and Akpom doesn't work in the 10, could we see perhaps Philogene being given a go there ala hutchinson with Clarke on the left.....
