The Shetlands were part of the Kingdom of Norway until 1472, and the Norn language (a version of Norse) survived there until the 1800s.
This is an old Shetland song with lyrics in Norn. As an aside, my grandmother's parents hailed from Unst, the most northerly inhabited island in the UK, and further north than Bergen.
