Cracking knock from England's finest, great to see him finally getting a century in Australia. Now that monkey is off his back, don't bet against him being the leading run scorer this series. He's looked in great nick today after a poor first test by his standards.

Lovely little cameo from Jofra at the end too. If these two can hang around from r half an hour in the morning then we'll be in a strong position.

I've been following England cricket since 1949 and I am in no doubt that Root 66 is England's finest.

Sorry Hutton, May, Cowdrey, Gooch etc.

Lovely innings that, though we shouldn't be surprised!

Hopefully, we'll grab a few runs tomorrow and a few early wickets.

It was a great knock, I think as you said he could have a really good series now.

On the day in general, I kind of felt the whole narrative towards the end of play about whether England should declare/hit out to have 2 or 3 overs at them sort of demonstrated the argument as to why a day night test shouldn't have a place in a series like the ashes. Getting the best of conditions is always a part of test cricket, but for a 20 minute phase of the game to be considered potentially so advantageous to one team over the other that England are considering declaring at under 300 in the first innings, and the Aussies seemed to be actively trying not to get that final wicket too early, just doesn't really seem right to me. I think they are great for series where you might struggle to fill the ground, but as Joe Root himself said, the Ashes just doesn't really need it.

Looks promising after the previous debacle.

correct on match situation, it was a slight gamble to keep going and not put them in for half hour but paid off. They need to close that out now by batting for a few more overs if possible and plus the change around take out half an hour of the better batting time tomorrow.

Completely forgot the Test had started. Very pleased for Root, very big monkey off his back. Will quiten a few Aussies. 325-9 is respectable but a very patchy scoreline. Very little consistency amongst our batsmen. Crawley got his standard decent knock when the vultures are circling . Hope he can kick on now.

it's decent, 265 all out was a distinct likelihood at one point which wouldn't have been!

Marvellous from Root. And we'll done to Crawley who didn't push on but made important runs today.

325 for 9 is ok. I'd like to see us clatter a quick 50 tomorrow but think we'll be all out for 340 or less. Feels about par to me. Let's see how we bowl though
