Long term planning, or just current necessity? 07:50 - Dec 11 with 564 viewsNthQldITFC

It seems to me that we're conceding possession a little more than perhaps we need to at times - not pressing flat out like we used to.

Is this entirely due to the players we have, or is it a (entirely sensible in my opinion) strategy aimed at preparing the core of this squad for a more counter attacking approach to next season if we are in the you know what?

Personally I don't think there's any long term visionary type strategy here but just let's not leave ourselves so open to conceding a goal

There were times at the start of this season that our press was either slow or too high , leaving two against two at the back and we suffered

I think it is just a factor of modern football once you get the first goal.

You don't NEED to chase the game at that point, so keep organised, let the other team pass it around in front of you, and hit them on the counter. It's what we did first half last night, and second half against Coventry, and we've seen loads of teams take that approach against us this season after conceding the first goal.

It's why scoring first is so important.

Yes, I've probably got recency bias on this, I guess.

I think it's predominantly the 3 games in a week situation. We got the first goal early. Then let the opposition come out and open up, stay tight, and hopefully we can hit them on the counter. Basically its game 2 of 3, so don't kill yourself pressing when there isnt the need, save something for game 3.
We had total control of the game, so I don't think its long term planning purely being sensible given the situation

I think it is McKenna adapting his team and approach - a team can have a lot of possession in areas where it does us no harm, as long as we keep our shape and concentration.

We have been caught several times this year by pushing on / chasing down and then the opposition just pumping a long ball over the top and/or going through a light midfield / defence.

For the last two matches we have sat deeper allowed the opposition to have the ball up to the final 1/3rd and make ourselves hard to break down. It's a significant shift in approach by McKenna and has taken some time to start to get right, but it's certainly making us more solid.

We have never had a solid defence under McKenna, always tried the outscoring approach, which did not work in the Prem and did not work at the start of this season as sides were playing much deeper.

McKenna and the coaching team deserve a lot of credit for this.

My impression is that KM is constantly trying to juggle winning games in the Championship with developing players and styles/patterns of play that will serve us well if we get promoted. I'm sure he learnt a huge amount last season about what it takes to be successful in the PL with a newly promoted team.

I definitely think that there has been a lot of work to make us less susceptible to being caught on the break. For example, I noticed last night that Furlong was the furthest back covering defensive player on our attacking set plays when previously it was Matusiwa (and Morsy before him) and I'm sure that is due to Furlong being faster.

I was also struck by comments KM made a while back about Jack Clarke and the fact that he is used more a finisher than a starter. I don't remember the exact words but the sentiment was that everything about Clarke's development is geared towards him being effective in the PL rather than in the here & now.

Anyway, I really enjoying seeing this squad develop week by week despite a few stumbles and frustrations along the way.
