| Custard Tarts. 06:20 - Dec 17 with 1892 views | Benters | Every day for the last few weeks my Tesco Express in Benters hasn’t had any custard tarts in the store. Yesterday we went shopping in a massive Tescos the same thing no custard tarts. Is anyone else struggling to find them? I guess it’s the mince pies fault. | |

Would say, virtually impossible to make a good version of the Portuguese one with a domestic oven, but you can knock out one of these beauties with a bit of skill and patience: https://www.greatbritishchefs.com/recipes/custard-tart-recipe

Or go to Lidl early enough in the day before all the Pastel de Nata get snapped up, I swear Lidl must have captured every Portuguese baker in the United Kingdom and got them into their supply chain. I have even gone as far as asking someone on the tills where the Pastel de Nata are and they said they were going to be delivered later that day. 'But all your other pastries are in the display.' 'Ah, the Pastel de Nata come in a separate delivery.'

'Ah, the Pastel de Nata come in a separate delivery.' I wonder if they are transported with the Madeira Cakes. Bloody Portuguese desserts, coming over here. [Post edited 18 Dec 7:37]

Admittedly they normally come with some sort of fruit on top, but in my view there is nothing to beat them. I might add that the versions of them you get in this country are not a patch on those in France. Indeed, when I used to go on day trips to Calais or Boulogne, I would come back clutching only a large one I had bought in a patisserie. In contrast, the vast majority of others on the boat had their cars packed to the rafters with cheap booze. [Post edited 18 Dec 12:06]

I’d rather come back with a shed load of custard tarts than that cheap French beer 🤮
