Custard Tarts. 06:20 - Dec 17 with 1892 viewsBenters

Every day for the last few weeks my Tesco Express in Benters hasn’t had any custard tarts in the store.

Yesterday we went shopping in a massive Tescos the same thing no custard tarts.

Is anyone else struggling to find them?

I guess it’s the mince pies fault.

On point (2), they all taste rubbish compared to the real thing rolling fresh out of the oven every 5 minutes in Portugal though.

There's a bakery in Oldham that does M&S cakes and it has a shop selling seconds. Four custard tarts for £1.50. Or in my case, 12.

A Newstead's custard tart was a childhood treat.

Or go to Lidl early enough in the day before all the Pastel de Nata get snapped up, I swear Lidl must have captured every Portuguese baker in the United Kingdom and got them into their supply chain. I have even gone as far as asking someone on the tills where the Pastel de Nata are and they said they were going to be delivered later that day. 'But all your other pastries are in the display.' 'Ah, the Pastel de Nata come in a separate delivery.'

Talking about custard, the best I've ever had was the custard that came with school dinners at my secondary school.

It was creamy-tasting and had a consistency much more substantial than any other custard I have ever had.

And in those days, if you went along late enough to dinner you could help yourself to seconds.

Without wishing to fall out with anyone, when it comes to tarts with custard in them, no one has mentioned the French variety.

Admittedly they normally come with some sort of fruit on top, but in my view there is nothing to beat them. I might add that the versions of them you get in this country are not a patch on those in France.

Indeed, when I used to go on day trips to Calais or Boulogne, I would come back clutching only a large one I had bought in a patisserie. In contrast, the vast majority of others on the boat had their cars packed to the rafters with cheap booze.
