Ahhh, but were you there as part of the 8,828 v Stockport in Nov 1997? We lost 2-0 and were lucky to get nil. Times change. But yes, you are right to raise the endless misery of the MM snorefest. Skuse, Douglas, Hyam. Shiver.

| 40,000 capacity on 19:33 - Dec 18 by Radlett_blue | "Fully committed to the Premier League"? Well, no doubt the owners (& supporters) would like Town to get there & stay there. Our realistic aim is the Brighton/Brentford type of model but that doesn't require a 40,000 capacity stadium & given the uncertainty of football, increasing the stadium size looks a very dubious investment. |

Yet there are tickets available in every part of the ground for Saturday...... The ground is perfect for us. Even if we get promoted, match day incomes are dwarfed by TV rights. Expanding our stadium is a needless distraction. See 25 years ago.

Many of which will be seats handed back by season ticket holders the Saturday just before Xmas. Our average attendance is less than 0.5% down on last season. As an established PL club, it’s clear we could pull in much larger crowds - and don’t forget we need to give up more seats to the opposition in the PL. This is sensible planning building for where the club wants to be.

If the ground is perfect now then surely expanding the stadium in the past wasn't needless?
| 40,000 capacity on 09:55 - Dec 19 with 391 views | grow_our_own | If we build it, they will come. The current demand to sit in restricted view seats in stands with poor facilities is not the barometer. There's a prestige and qualitative value to drawing 40k. We as a club need to belong in the Prem. Demand there will take care of itself. | | | |

Rebuilding 2 stands on the back of 1 successful PL season was risky, especially as it was funded by securitising future season ticket income. That's probably why Town went into admin after relegation, although all 3 clubs relegated that season eventually went into administration, partly thanks to the collapse of ITV Digital.

There is no benefit to doing it until established in the Prem other than satisfying hubris.

There's no guarantee that all 6k will accept their place once seats become available. If there'd have been a nominal fee e.g. £10 to be deducted from the cost of the season ticket, then I wonder if that figure might be lower. I think that exercise was to gauge interest, but also to give an insight as to the demand should we increase prices.

Average attendance has only dropped below 60% on 5 occasions during those 25 years), and the average across those years is 75%. Considering the dross served up for some of those years, these stats don't really match your narrative.

Our highest average between 10/11 and 19/20 was 19,615 which is 67% of 29k. Before the new North and South our ground was 22.6k. Given I pulled 60% out of thin air earlier, it appears to exactly match the narrative. We will always get a load of bandwagon fans at or near the Prem. They'll disappear again if we don't go up this sesson.

Not cherry picking timeframes much then. You stated 25 years not 10. Easy to support your point if you decide to selectively choose a minority range in the 25. You also argued only 60% full for 20 of those 25. 2/3rds over that 25 year period were 75% to capacity. Neither of your points are remotely close. None of those 25 years were with the lower Portman Road capacity either. You’re also completely ignoring the general trend on football attendance. This has grown from a post-war low 30 years ago, to an all time peak that has steadily grown the past 20 years.
