I wonder what the thoughts & feelings are internally 08:36 - Dec 27 with 435 viewsIPSWICHFANITFC

I’m sure the happiest man is Mark Ashton. The movement in and out of the summer transfer window left a lot to be questioned. But it is a results business and from a results point of view, we sit in an excellent position to attack the second half of the season.

But I wonder what Ashton is thinking about the group of players and performances. Does he think we are average and where we are because it’s a very bang average Championship this season? Or does he feel we are a good side?

I wonder what McKenna thinks too. I’m sure he is relieved at the league position despite the inconsistency from a performance perspective on the pitch.

As a player, you know whether you are a top team, an average one or a poor one deep down.

I think Ashton and to a lesser extent McKenna are happy as they are thinking big picture and much longer term than most fans do. Of course they want success (promotion) this season but would be far less concerned if we don’t get it as long as the club is moving forward eg ground development, infrastructure , funding, academy etc

As fans we are focused on the last/next game and where we are in the league so after yesterday we see a poor draw against a weakened Millwall side and a likely beating from Cov coming up.

Why a likely beating from Coventry ringwood? We gave Coventry a beating recently and if they are confident enough to attack us (as they should be with their lead in the table) in a way that virtually no other team has tried to do, it's just as likely that we'll give them another beating.

Coventry laboured massively at home against struggling Swansea yesterday and were a touch fortunate to escape with the win. They were battering sides early doors but have found it much harder going recently. It's a game we should be looking to win.

M’boro looked terrible second half at home to Blackburn as well. Rovers had the better of them I’d argue. The thing is though, this is when we all thought our squad would be making the difference and is why yesterday represents a missed opportunity with basically no one outside Cov winning. It adds to the frustration in many ways.

But in isolation an away draw at Millwall, who have play off aspirations themselves, in a game where we were largely on top is not a disaster. Yes it would have been lovely to win and close the gap to the top 2 of course and it's frustrating that we still can't turn our dominant spells into decent chances and that we aren't clinical enough with the chances we do create. But drawing away at a top 6 side really isn't terrible and if we get something at Coventry and win our next two after that then it's been a good Christmas.

Too many “in isolation” games this year that’s the problem. It’s trotted out after every ok result. That’s not how you gain ground. Not sure why you’re not acknowledging playing them with basically one fit midfielder over a busy festive period wasn’t a huge chance blown. If we beat Cov, I guess 7 points looks decent, hell of a big if though.

Trying to think how many good half’s we have played in our last three games really, even Wednesday at home had problems in he first. It’s all just a bit meh. We need to string together 5 or 6 wins at some point and the team isn’t really showing us it’s capable IMO.

It’s only a poor draw away from home if your expectations are for a win. Even poorer of you feel entitled to win as many of the dismals do, even against a well organised top six team.

Yes, Millwall had a weakened side. They’ve actually had a weakened side for a number of weeks. Worse than it is at the moment according to a Millwall ST golf chum. Maybe they deserve a little credit. Btw we lost our first choice CF too but let’s not spoil the narrative.

Likely beating by Coventry? It’s possible but by no means certain. We have the capacity to dismantle them as we did a few weeks ago and the capacity to die like a louse in a Russians beard.

Fans focus on what they want to see. In ITFCs case some it would seem want to see failure and the red faced sweaty excitement of a new manager and new CEO. The future? The growth and development of the football club? At least one person on this forum isn’t interested in that. Winning and winning well every game is all they’re interested in. That person wants the stadium for football use only, not this multi use nonsense. I.e. as it was when the world was in black and white and all shorts were as big as Jack Clarke’s

To your first paragraph, it depends on whether you believe in what the club is saying. They’ve done what they’ve said they’re going to do to date so I see no reason to challenge them at the moment. They are looking long term and if I was a betting person (I’m not) I’d put a bit on them prioritising infrastructure and development over short term team. In my view rightly so.

It’s lack of foundations in everything from scouting to yoof to a fit for purpose training facility were a big factor in last season’s collapse after new year. The latter MA described as one of the worst in the Championship. I don’t see how it could be anything else given investment in twenty years amounted to a tin of cheap paint for the portacabin.

That is not to say the owners haven’t given McKenna the best opportunity they can for him to get the club promoted. Have we underperformed? Yes. We all know that. KM and the CEO will be held accountable if we are not promoted or at least look like we have good challenging side next year. The club is owned by Americans and we all know they don’t hang about.

Many people’s dearest wish will be fulfilled between now and May or soon after anyway. McKenna will almost certainly be gone, probably when a better club than ITFC becomes available. I hope ITFC have somebody lined up (succession planning). Now’s the time to do it.
